Subject: Rear Axel problem ?? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I think something is wrong with my rear axel but I don't know much about them so I'm looking for help.
Someone pointed out to me today while I was driving that both my rear wheels look like the are wobbling when I drive. I turned the mirrors down so I could see and sure enough they both are.
All the lugs were wrenched tight and I took the wheels off and spun the axel and it looks like something is warped inside the axel or ???? Any ideas? All the weights on the wheels were still in place so I don't think it's a balancing issue with the wheels.
I do tow a lot and I have a 125,000k on my 8.25 rear end so maybe at some point recently it just gave within the last 2 weeks because recently I have felt vibration back there.
Any ideas? I wonder what a new axel costs?

Message: Sounds like the axles are bent. Be sure and check the axle tubes, too. Sometimes the flanges will get bent out of shape with the axles.

Message: did you check to see if you bent a wheel.i really cant see you bending the axle itself. i towed a 18ft camper trailer and a 350 quad in the back all the time and had no problems.

Message: I think there is something wrong with all the wheels or the tires because I moved the front two to the rear and they have a wobble too.
I have american eagles 589s on since last summer with BFG 33x12.5x15. Maybe the wheels are out round or something.
I'm taking it too 4wheelparts tomorrow to have them check them since I purchase them there last august.
I thought maybe it was the new drum brakes I put on because the balancer on the drum was sticking out further than the flat surface on the drum but my friend watched my truck roll and he said it looked like all 4 wheels are messed up which perplexes the hell out of me. Maybe the 589s aren't strong enough or maybe a pervious tire shop didn't tighten them all enough and that caused them to warp... who knows?? I don't off road and I have not curb checked these wheels once.
Luckily I kept my old stock wheels and from what I can tell after putting those on I did not see the woble but it was hard to see alone tonight in the dark. I'll let you all know tomorrow after I bring it too 4wheel parts.

Message: I forgot to mention that I took it too an axel shop yesterday (tues) and once the wheels were off there was no wobble. the guy did a test and he said the rotation was well within the limits so it's definitely not an axel issue so that tells me it's got to be the wheels.
I just can't believe I can't feel it when I'm driving and I'm curious how long it's been this way...irratating.
