You asked a lot of questions.
Valvoline Max Life
All Valvoline Synthetic's uses a Group III base oil, so it's not technically a synthetic, but hydrocracked "dino" crude oil (... a PRETEND SYNTHETIC), and there really is no comparison between it and Amsoil, which is a TRUE SYNTHETIC, formulated in the laboratory from Natural Gas.

All oils are comprised of BASE OILS and ADDITIVES.
Premium Oils use the BEST of both.
A TRUE synthetic uses either Group IV or Group V base oils (not Group III), or a mix of Group IV and Group V, plus their own unique additives package. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of the TRUE synthetics use all of one, they mix a combination of both. Group IV is PAOs (Polyalfaolefins) while Group IV is the esters. If you want to know if an oil is a TRUE Synthetic look for the letters PAO.

Valvoline's additive package is pretty weak, while Amsoil's is very good. Comparing Valvoline to Amsoil is like comparing Miller Lite to a quality MicroBrew.

What makes "High Mileage" Oil ... a "High Mileage Oil"?
... Such as Valvoline Maxlife, Mobil1 Higher Mileage, and Quaker State's similar product, etc.? What do these oils really contain that make them different - or do they contain anything/nothing that makes them different? In reality, it's a lot of marketing lingo (also known as B.S.), and not much difference in the oil.
They used to contain a lot more additives, like Maxlife did at first, but now the only real difference (compared to their other oils) is that it uses about a 10% ester mix ( a seal sweller ) for it's base oil, supposedly to help slow any leaks.
Also, these high mileage oils often end up being on the thicker end of their respective viscosities. Other than that, they aren't much different.

Oil consumption of 1 qt. per 1,000 miles is high. You may have a serious problem, but I may have an inexpensive solution.
(SPECIAL NOTE: Most newer and low mileage vehicles can switch from dino to synthetic at any time without a flush. If you have a higher mileage vehicle I... would recommend an engine flush first.)
Amsoil has an Engine Flush, but I am posting here to offer you an alternative. I know many guys that have in older engines with great results. It's name is Auto-Rx, (and no - I do not sell this product).
Auto-Rx ... www.Auto-Rx.com
This product should be considered no matter what oil or engine used (... though some Amsoil Clients have used it with great success, ... Auto-Rx's website states you should use it with dino only and not synthetic oil). Auto-Rx is vegetable based and I've been told that it does not affect chemistry or viscosity at all.
Auto-Rx is NOT an Additive but a engine cleaner that (I've been told) really works. It has a residual effect because it cleans the rings and valve seats and valve guide seals so well. Lasts 10000 miles or so in a gasoline engine.
Should you be concerned about seals? I've been told this stuff will simply clean the abrasive deposits that keep the seal from functioning normally. I've also talked to guys that have run tests and they say it doesn't damage anything.
I know a guy who used it in an older engine with a noticable oil pan gasket leak and it almost stopped the leakage after 500 miles. He also stated that it also helped his noisy lifters and cleaned off baked on varnish.
Auto-Rx is a "safe" alternative and should be used prior to switching oils, and hopefully it will help with your oil consumption. You can check out their website at www.auto-rx.com
