Can anyone help me with this: I have a '98 Dakota Sport with the 5.2L engine. When I first start the truck up it idles VERY fast, the goes down to the 1000 RPM range (still too high) and doesn;t want to idle down any further. I then have to "clunk" it into drive. When I get to my destination and put it in park, it again idles too high. It is even worse if I have been running my air conditioning. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

It may be your throttle position sensor or the gasket between the throttlebody and the intake manifold may have failed. That's what caused the same condition on my 92 3.9L Dak.

From reading archived messages on this board, I see a lot of people have had throttle positions sensor problems. Maybe I'll try that first. Thanks for your help.

Most likely a dirty IAC (Idle Air Control) solenoid. They get gummed up over time. You can clean it with carb cleaner or just replace it with a new one. Haven't had to mess with mine yet, but I've read on this board that you have to be careful not to tweak the plunger - it's pretty delicate.

Another reason I think it might be the TPS is that in another post someone mentioned similiar problems to mine and their cruise was acting up. My cruise control kind of "bucks" sometimes. The poster had noted that when they replaced their TPS the cruise started acting fine as well.....
