Have a 2005 Dakota, club cab,4.7,5spd a/m,limited slip, w/tow package. Has anyone had a rear wheel vibration that will not go away. I have driven 5 2005's, V6 & V8, 4 & 5 spd a/m and all have the same problem. Dealer replaced 11 Goodyear Eagle LS tires and 8 rims, but still have problem, though not as bad. Dodge tech services that it is a characteristic of the Dakota and that is how they want to solve the problem!! The only common item to all 5 Dakota's driven were the Eagle LS.
However, when 400 lbs + is loaded in the back end 95% of vibration goes away. I think there is a problem with the shocks being too stiff. Any thoughts out there?
Thank you

a couple of months ago i had an '05 QC slt 4x2 4.7 auto as a rental for about 9 weeks. put about 2k miles on it(had 33 when i picked it up) and had no probs like that. it too had the Badyear Eagles on it. i think the dodge tech is full of it!

a lot of things could do that. out of round rims or tires, out of balance wheels, drums out of round?

Based on what you are saying I would think it is an improper drive line angle - I had a problem like this on a wrangler I lifted. I had to shim the rear axle to correct the angle problem.
When you are adding weight to the back and the problem goes away it could be due to the change in the shaft angle...just an idea...

CODYKID,
this may be a dumb question but did you check the rear u-joints? What speeds are you getting the rattle at? Look at the angle of the drive shaft - It should be the same coming out of your tranny as it is going into your rear diff. I hate rattles, let us know what you find.

First--thank you for the responses.
1. Daddio-- Dealer changed 11 tires and 8 wheels before finding a set that dial checked ok. The brake drums were also dial checked and ok. Also, found that dealer puts full trust in their pneumatic torgue wrench. Wrong, I checked with a manual calibrated torque wrench and the dealer settings were low and not all lugs on each were torqued the same. Used a 100 ft lbs set when I did them. The mileage as of today is 826.
2 & 3. QC -- I don't think the problem is in the u-joints as the angle barely lowered 1/4" when the 400+ was added. I think the shocks are valved slightly too high and a harmonic is being set up at certain speeds. When first delivered the virbration started at 35 went away at 45 to 53, came back at 54/55 and held until 68 to 70. Over 70 the centrifical force help reduce the vibration to an acceptable level. After 2nd time at dealer the lower vibration was removed when the dealer a load test balance done and 3 tires replaced due to out round. It was better, but vibration now started at 56 thru 70. Third time back 4 more tires and wheels changed. I went for test drive with dealer QC person and the low speed vibration came was back. Back to dealer and found 3 more out of round tire. Next we test drove 3 more new Dakotas and found the front 2 that there was no vibration thru the steering and traded these 4 wheels and tires. These were the best yet and still on there, but still have a vibration in the 53 to 60 area. Have a bed cap on order and hope the weight of it will help providing the ballast. Time will tell. Still why is it that I drove 5 different 2005 and there is the same problem. Only 2 of the had the tow package. Thanks again. will keep you advised.
