just curious. i want to start changing my oil and filter myself to save cash and i just like workin on my dak. i run synthetic oil but want to start using k&n filters. i figure even with the cost of the k&n filter i will still save money.
when i get it done at the oil well here in NJ they also lube the chassis. how often is the chassis lube neccessary. are there tools i can buy to do it myself? if so, what are the best quality.

I lube the chassis (zerks) every oil change. Cheap insurance when you consider how much
for a tube of grease vs. the cost to replace those moving parts.

The only tool you will need is a grease gun & the tube of grease that goes in it. The
grease guns go for about $14-$20 in the Zone. The grease is $5 if you go full synthetic
(Mobil 1). Don't forget to clean off the fittings first, so as not to contaminate the
grease going in.

Off the top of my head, there are as many as 11 zerks to lube, but YMMV. I have a 99 CC
4x4, so I have to grease:

2 upper ball joints (assuming there not stock)
2 lower ball joints
2 outer tie rod ends
2 inner tie rod ends
1 idler arm
2 on the center link

If I miss anything, let me know. I Shouldn't be up this late.

I get whatever oil is on sale. Mobil1, Castrol, Valvoline. Although, Mobil1
goes on sale @ K-mart or Wal-Mart every now & then. As far as better (air?)
filter, I believe Holley & a couple of others are making air filters that
compete against K&N but don't know how good they are. I myself have the K&N
FIPK. As far as chassis lube, Mobil1 & Valvoline are the only names I recall.

Steve Roark...if you happen to see this...don't you have a table that shows how well the different oil filters flow (and how well they actually filter stuff out of the oil)? Would be interested in seeing that posted here.

I personally use a Mobil 1 oil filter with Mobil 1 oil (would LIKE to get Amsoil, but I'm too lazy to order it and usually don't have the money to order it in bulk like I'd rather do)...not sure how good the filter is compared to others but I figure it's better than Fram. I'd heard Fram's aren't good so I decided to switch.

here is that oil filter study

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

also do not get whatever synthetic is on sale. Only mobil 1 and amsoil are true synthetics, the others are not because they use a base stock of dyno that has been reworked

U-joints are supposed to be greased every 7,500 miles.
