Subject: How do you wire in a brake controller? IP: Logged
Message: OK guys...I just bought a Tekonsha Envoy electric brake controller. I have a 2001 Quad Cab Dakota with the 5.9L, 3.92 gears, LSD and the trailer kit. I wired up the brake controller and found the very well hidden light blue plug under the dashboard for the trailer brake plugin, but I don't get a green light on my controller showing a true connection. The trailer brakes on the horse trailer instantly lock up when I try and pull forward. But the trailer lights, turn signals and brake lights work fine. Did I miss a step or wire it wrong? Anyone have to do this before with their newer Dakota? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Message: doesn't your Tek have an adjustment for the sensitivity for your brakes..you normally have to set that to your particular needs...it sounds as if your is set all the way to lock down. I may have a knob to back off that braking power a bit.

Message: Yup there is an adjustment on the underside of the box. But I don't even get the green light on the front side that is supposed to be show that I have a completed circuit with the trailer. Yet if I start to move they instantly lock up which means I at least have power to them.

Message: move that adjustment to the halfway position from there and see if that helps...

Message: I'd like to know if anyone has a brake controler in a dak that doesn't have a towing package. I've got a controler that has to be hooked up to the "cold side of the brake light switch" - but I haven't got a clue where that wire I'm looking for might be. Any help?

Message: Should be the white wire with the brown stripe. or you could use a circuit tester or a multimeter and have someone depress the pedal. You should have 0 volts when the pedal is not pressed and 12 when it is pressed.

Message: Check your wiring, you shouldn't have power to the trailer brakes unless either your truck brakes are pressed or you activate the controller.

Message: same thing happened to me and there are two ways that they wire trailers for the brakes. I had to switch two wires in my harness to make the brakes work properly. are you using any adapter between the trailer harness and the trucks harness?

Message: If your controller is like mine, you should only have 4 wires out of the brake controller, blue, red, white, and black. The blue wire is the one that should go to your brake line in the trailer. The red line should go to your truck's brake light sense (12V when the brake pedal is depressed). The black should go to 12V and the white should go to ground. When you manually engage the brake controller, the blue line should go to 12V. I'd tell you the wire colors on the Dakota side but I have an 03 that didn't come with the trailer harness. I had to run the wires myself (rewire it...). You need a Volt/Ohm meter to test it out. The blue wire from your plug on the brake controller should go to pin #2 in your 7 pin connector on the back of the truck (usually connected to a blue wire).
