Subject: Clear Corners Illegal?
IP: Logged

Message:
I purchased some clear corners for my 2000 Dakota, and I've heard that they are illegal. I thought it was only the bulb that matters. I have all (6) amber bulbs in them......Can anyone help me on this question.

I also live in Florida, if that matters.

They are NOT illegal. I have clear corners with clear bulbs and I have not once been pulled over because of them.

PYE -
Yes. Yours are illegal. Just because you haven't been pulled over, doesn't make them legal, just makes the cops in your area very unobservant or they, like you, just don't care.

Jeff -
Using amber colored bulbs is a good thing. Front turn signals must (legally) be amber, either by lens color or bulb color. What causes legality problems is that an amber colored passive reflector, required by law, is no longer present on the front of your vehicle. It WAS on your OEM corners.

You need to check your state's laws. They differ somewhat between states. In TX, you can have white or amber light for the turn signals, but other states require amber.

Also depends on the local enforcement officials whether it's an "offense" or not...

Traffic regulations in most States require that replacement lighting must be "OEM Type". OEM must meet federal (DOT) standards so most clear lens are illegal by most state statutes.
Some cops have BIG problems with other than OEM lighting, others use lighting as grounds to stop cars looking for more serious violations, others don't care (they were young once with questionable auto equiptment)
Their was a store in NYC that use to sell phoney DOT stickers for motorcycle helmets so when cops stopped mc's they'd think the NY Yankee and Mets batting helmets met DOT standards.

Yup...here in Texas as long as the white bulbs are easily visable, they are legal.

No, cops here do not like me, I have a record(since then turned my life around to a point) and they bug me constantly.

When i was stopped I asked a state trooper about them and he said they were fine.

Here in PA as long as the bulbs are amber when turned on their fine. Thus my clearcorners with amber bulbs. Clean clear look in the day time but when I use the turn signals or headlights they glow amber. Some people have invested in titanium bulbs that look clear but glow amber just to get any orange coloring whatsoever out of the bulbs. I hear they're expensive though.

It all depends on your local jurisdiction and if they want to enforce the law. Blue bulbs are illegal everywhere except as aux warning lights for snow removal equipment. Don't be surprised if you get a ticket one day.

I don't know why people do sh*t like that any way. i.e. blue bulbs and putting in fast flashers.

Turn signals were made for a reason and making them work improperly is just stupid and a worthless ricer mod in my opinion.

And DOT requires REFLECTIVE lens, which most of them aftermarket ones (stated as FOR SHOW USE ONLY) do NOT meet DOT requirements

Ace - yes, you're still letting people know you're turning.
Except at night, when that rapidly flashing blue light could be mistaken for an emergency vehicle, depending on distance and other factors.
Front turn signal color is mandated by laws for many different reasons.

Concerning automobile lighting, here's a sample of the regulations auto makers have to deal with. It's kinda dry reading, but informative.

If the clear corners have the DOT marking on them and you use amber bulbs, they are legal. My Cavalier has clear corners from the factory.

The DOT marking means they meet DOT standards for light output, etc, when used with a specific bulb/filament rating.
A great deal of the discussion here seems to center on combinations of front lenses and bulbs that do not create federally mandated amber turn signals.

I would also recommend that you buy from a reputable vendor (not ebay) it's easy to manufacture aftermarket parts that have phony DOT markings,Read my prior posting.
It's a safety issue.

You have to have passive amber reflectors on the front of your car to be legal. Will you get a ticket? Maybe maybe not, but the question was is it legal..the answer is no not without amber reflectors. This is a federal standard not a state to state thing.

DOT, check you cav I'll bet it has amber reflectors.

Why do people have to install blue bulbs to let people know you are a "tuner"?

That almost made me laugh. There is absolutely NO REASON to EVER have a blue light in ANY turn signal, parking lights, etc.

I remember back in the day one of my friends had a pair of KC day lighters on the front of his ride (popular up in the mountains to have aftermarket lighting) and a cop THOUGHT they were flashing back and forth like a cop cars would. He had him pulled over and we watched them argue and the guy show the cop the wiring to the switch and how both lights were even ran off of one wire so there was no way he PURPOSELY had them flashing like that.

Just shows how some cops will be d*cks if they suspect something as being so called "illegal".

If one of his lights was shorting or something then that's an accident. Installing BLUE BULBS in your flashers would just be ignorant.

graphite,
wtf is ur problem, they look awsome during the day and especially at night, and no offense to anyone but ud hafta be a moron to mistake it for a cop. i didnt put them in to prove i was a "tuner"..... not even sure where u pulled that from. so there is reason to put a blue bulb in, it looks good. and if there is no reason 2 do that then is there ne reason to put in clear corners?. i also have stobe lights, idc if there illegal, they look sweet when i turn em on.
