Subject: Difference between Models?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been looking around a little at used trucks - pretty much Dakotas. I've currently got a '01 Exp. Sport Trac 4x4 with about 70k on it. I've actually been pretty happy with the truck but I could use a little more power for towing and wouldn't mind a bigger bed as well.

Anyways - I was wondering if there is really a difference between say an SLT and a Sport besides the color scheme and a few standard interior features? Is the suspension different at all? I found an '03 Quad Cab Sport (2wd) 4.7L automatic w/ 12k miles on it for about 15k. Personally based just on looks I would just assume not get a Sport - but if there is no substantial difference then I wouldn't let it keep me from buying one.

I would also prefer to find one with the 3.92 rear axle ratio for towing - were these more common/available on one model vs another? Any tips would be appreciated.

The Sport and SLT are trim/exterior differences only. Generally speaking the Sport goes for a painted/monochromatic look, while the SLT heads for chrome and some two-tone paint, and standard equipment. The 3:55 gear is most common in Daks, adequate for real light towing. 3:92 gears are out there, but rare. All R/T's came with 3:92's, but R/T's have a low tow rating. Five speed manuals have higher tow ratings, and a good number came with 3:92's, 4.7 or 5.2 v-8's.

3.55s are more than adequate for "light towing" - I pull about 5000 lbs with those gears with no problems. I don't believe the manuals have higher tow ratings than the automatics.

3.92's come with the optional towing package. Don't know how
commmon the towing package is, but my '03 QC 4x4 has it.

The towing package does not include 3.92 gears of LSD, you had to order them seperate. IIRC, it was $250 for the LSD, and $25 for the optional gear ratio - something like that. And they are hard to find. Oddly enough, I had a hard time finding a 4x4 with LSD.

are you saying my 99 Dak 4X4 with LSD and 3.92 gears is rare.

I know it pulls like a son of a gun in the snow.
all four wheels push.

I'll keep the rarity in mind when I get ready to sell it.

.boB is correct - the tow package definitely does not include 3.92 gears. Some of you guys should give up repeating this false info.

adequate for real light towing
?????????
I was not aware that a truck rated for 7000 plus lbs was rated only for "real light towing"

why is it that the first one to answer posts that the answers are easily verifiable answers as if he is talking out his but?
If you do not have the answer directly in front of you IE a sales brochure as I use for ALL answers on "97's keep it shut unless you know positively without a doubt.
