To the best of my recolection
Gen I - pre '91 non magnum engines old boddy style
Gen II - '92 -'96 Magnum engine old body style
Gen III - '96 and up Magnum engine new body style

I would say, going by body style, it would be
Gen I - first year (87 or 88?) to 90
Gen II - 91 (new body style but no magnum v8) to 96
Gen III - 97 to present
I say 91 is gen 2 via bodystyle, but some say it is gen 1 via premagnum engine
