Subject: Cooling Fan Roar IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 with a 4.7 V8. I noticed that the cooling fan "roars" even after the truck has come up to operating temperature. Every time I stop at a stop sign, the fan will roar until I get up to about 10 miles per hour. The car is not overheated and it is winter outside here in CA, in the mid to upper 70's, not at all hot. Could someone give me some insight into whether this is normal or do I need a new fan clutch? I was under the impression that it should engage when the car temperature gets too warm.
Thanks.

Message: I have the same truck and my clutch fan only engages on cold mornings and when its real hot out. Other than that I never notice it. Does your fan stay on all the time? Is your aux fan working? If your aux fan is not working and you use your defrost or AC then your are placing extra heat load from the condensor onto your radaitor. If your aux fan works and your clutch fan is "on" all of the time then I would think its defective. I hope that helps

Message: My aux fans do work. The fan clutch engages only after I've stopped or the rpm's drop to idle for a minute or so then, like I said, the fan engages until I get up to speed then it releaes. I agree with you Jason, I think it's defective. Thanks for responding..

Message: Hilarious,
You still have your belt driven clutch fan on your 4.7?
So a search, save some money, get more HP and torque, and get rid of that useless thing. MIne's been off almost 4 yrs, and no problems.

Message: TexasTodd.. you really run your truck without the fan? You just took the fan off the truck? Do the aux electric fans keep the truck cool enough without the belt driven fan? The thought did occur to me that all that fan power was a little over redundant. Best idea I've heard all day. Damn, where's my wrench..

Message: Dakotian, just like Texas Todd said...Do a search. A lot of use have removed the clutch fan on our 4.7's w/o any problems at all. I only reinstalled mine for the winter because I have a plow and wanted to have the extra cooling while driving down the road(the plow totally blocks the airflow). Otherwise all summer long the electric fans keep the truck nice and cool. Even in trafic. I don't know if it actually increases HP, but it does seem to be more snappy of the line with out the clutch fan.

Message: Dakotian,
I took off the clutch fan on my '03 Dak too. It has the electric fan and I left in the 195* thermostat. I haven't had any cooling probs at all and I live in Odessa, TX where it gets over 100* in the summer. It also feels peppier and gets better mileage, although I did switch to synthetic fluids a while back.

Message: Thanks Figols and JM_in_TX, I appreciate your responses and everybody else. I definately will take that fan off and try it. My only concern was that the electric fans would run more than they were intended to to make up for the loss of the fan clutch but it doesn't seem to be hurting you guys any so I fugure I don't have much to lose. It's just that I'm thinking that it's cheaper to buy a new fan clutch than it is to replace those electric fans but I'm willing to give it a try.
Thanks again guys..

Message: From up here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada, I
would love to thank you for the great advice on
the removal of the fan and fan clutch!!!! I have
been so disappointed with my 2000 Dodge Dakota and
the motor roaring like I'm pulling a semi
trailer..... But now I'm a happy camper, no more
roar!!! I've noticed what another person posted
earlier, it seems free and more powerful . Next
is the big test, see if the crappy gas mileage is
somewhat corrected. I'm keeping fingers crossed
until I find out. I will make a post if this is
a noticeable improvement.
I did have one issue with heat, but realized the
electric fan relay was faulty when it never kicked
in,replaced it in the fuse box under the hood and
is working fine now.
A big thanks to you folks on this forum.......
