Message: Max, my work truck (92 full size Ram with 3.9)
goes through a muffler at least once a year. No
problem for me, I don't pay for them.
Just last week I took the truck to the muffler
shop and dropped it off when I noticed they also
sold Flowmaster type mufflers. Just for a joke I
told the owner I'd love to try one of those on
this truck (the 92 Ram) but the company I work
for would not go for the difference in price. He
said he would install one at the same price as
a normal muffler because he knows I'd like one
installed on my 02 Dakota 4.7 sooner or later.
To make a long story short, I wish I would have
kept my mouth SHUT! As it turns out, the drown
within the cab is NOT very nice to listen to. The
muffler is NOT a Flowmaster (I can't remember the
name of it) but is was its "50" series. They had
a 40 to 70 series chart to pick from.
I know there is a BIG difference between a 3.9
V6 and a 4.7 V8 but after hearing what I have
right now, I will not have anything put on my
Dakota other than factory unless I can test ride
in someone elses Dakota 4.7 and *hear* the
results for myself before I buy.
You might want to do the same first.

Message: 99 RT with 40 series muffler, just cut the stock muffler out,and swapped in the flowmaster 40 series....There is some resonance inside the truck, the sound outside is a nice low rumble at low rpm, that can get nice and throaty as the rpm's increase.I am pretty happy with it.For now.

Message: Shoulda had him put on a delta flow... I personally like the in-cab resonance on my 40 series but I'm just another idiot teen as well. lol
Delta flows are sposed to be just as loud on the outside and much quieter on the inside.

Message: Get the Flowmaster SUPER 40 muffler. It was designed to have a good deep sound outside the truck but isn't loud inside the cab.

Message: Been 'roddin since 1st gto in 65-ANY muffler that isnt straight thru disrupts exhaust pressure wave & hurts performance. Had flos, turbos, etc & they are ALL loud if no addl equip added. My solution for my 01 4.7 QC was to mount a 30"glasspak, and a 2nd 24"gp behind it with a splitter to get my duals.Sounds impressive gettin down, & doesnt have the 2k DRONE common to flos. IF still too loud , you can add resonators, or res tips. A K&N repl airfilter & avg mileage jumped from 14 to 16.
Good Luck w/yur truk

Message: Mine is a 40 sries Delta Flow.
Maybe I'm lucky but mine has no annoying resonance inside the cab at all. It is a 3 inch in and out butthat was on accident which i reduced down to my 2 1/2 inch pipe. All my pipe is stock too except for a 3 inch chrome extension at the outlet.
krellco has a point about the glass pack. They performa bout as good as anything you will pay 3 times the price for! In my experience they are failry mellow at an idle when you have a full exhaust but get wickedly loud on RPM's!!
When I go true duals I'd be tempted to run glass packs again. But I'm very happy with my single 40 series delto flow flowmaster for now.
I've posted this sound clip about 20 times before, but it's been a while.
Here's mine sitting in the drive way with a quick rev

Message: I was wondering what the loudest muffler you can get out there. right now i have a magnaflow, but it isnt loud enough. I was wondering if a 40 series would make that much of a difference. Exhaust noise is no problem where i live, but i want to pass emissions (no straight pipes)

Message: 3" flowtech afterburner muffler. nice rumble no resonance inside cab, only $40 summit racing. one of the 5.0 mags did a muffler shootout and this muffler was in the leading pack which were all within 1-2 hp well within dyno error.

Message: I like the sound of GraphiteDaks muffler. How close will my 5.2L sound to that? Everything else is stock for the exhaust. What size inlet outlet did you use? What if I used a 3"in and out, with an adaptor for the in and a 3" pipe out?

Message: 95Dak,
i have a single flowmaster 40 series on my 2000 5.2 Durango. It sounds damn good and is not even noticable while cruising. I think that's because i am just using the stock pipe... most that i have seen/heard with bad resonance usually incorporate dual exhaust or turndowns.

Message: My bro in law has a 2000 Ram 5.2
He installed a flowmaster 40 series deltaflow at the same time I did.
Here's the interesting part. He THOUGHT mine sounded a little more agressive than his. Both used stock pipe except for the last outlet section we both used a 3 inch chrome piece.
The only difference was that I had a 3 inch single in and out when his was 2 1/2 inch.
the ONLY reason I got a 3 inch was because I just so happened to stop by Lopers performance one day while working (not in my Dak) and asked for the muffler. They said the book showed a 3 inch. I was surprised but beleived them so I took that one home. Hacked mine off and behold my pipe is just 2 1/2 inches. So I took and made home made reducers (nothing to in when you have a welder and a grinder).
So I didn't buy a 3 inch on purpose.
After that my bro in law (thinking mine was louder) went and bought a 3 inch flowmaster and did the same thing. I guess mine is a little more agressive sounding still, but still I think they sound about the same.
I don't know if a 3 inch makes that much difference or not. I think the interior mechanism is exactly the same for the two sizes.
There's some of the pics I took during installation if that helps.
Oh yeah. Like Intense said, maybe it's the FAKE DUALS after the flowmaster that make some people's sound like crap.
I don't know why someone would run duals out the back UNLESS they had true duals form the headers back.

Message: hey. i have an 87 v6 dakota that im putting a flowmaster 40s series muffler single in dual out on. i will let you know how it sounds when im done but about the super 40s. not worth it. my friend owns an exhaust shop and opened up a 40 sereis and a super 40 and there is virtually no difference. in my opinion its not worth it. just go with a regular 40.
