Just to add to the confusion... I drove a 1970 Chevrolet CST 10 with a 350 in it to 263,000 miles before I sold it. I bought it from my uncle, who was the original owner. It still had the original wood bed in it when I sold it. In the 11 years that I drove it, I had to replace the starter and water pump, have the carb rebuilt twice and redo the wiring to the left-front marker light. I think what it boils down to is how a vehicle is maintained. I drove the piss out of this truck with the stock three speed auto in it, revving it to who knows what RPMs (no tach).

Fact :

It is cheaper to own a domestic pick-up than a foreign pick-up.

Plus :

How many 1975 (30 year old) JAP trucks do you see people driving around ?

Thanks for the info prowlrt.
So we have a Volvo that’s documented as having the overall world record mileage and a Plymouth that is documented with the North American mileage record.

So where are these fabled Japanese mileage record holders that many Americans believe exist? After all, legend has it that Japanese cars / engines outlast everything else.

That's a good point Dr D. I see alot of 60-70s chevys and fords and a few dodges too. A few weeks ago I saw a 56 ford that was for sale. It had 56,000 ORIGINAL miles on it. I didn't believe until I talked to the guy who showed me the odometer. If i had the money I would loved to have bought it!

The proof is in the sales numbers. Dodge's numbers are plummeting while Toyota's numbers sky rocket out into space.

Dodge can't give em away and Toyota can't make them fast enough.

Either everybody else is stupid or you are.

I agree with ya graphite. To say foriegn engines are built to last longer is not really a true statement. It comes down to this, the driver of the vehicle. You take good care of your truck/car, it's gonna last you. Simple as that. We have a Dakota and a Mazda Protege sitting in our driveway. Both have been extremely reliable with little problems. My Dakota tows and has done some offroading and still runs just as good as the highway driven Mazda. Take care of your stuff and it will last!

Here is my .000002 cents.

Imports and domestics are different, they are made differently and that perform differently. with that said, they will both last a long time assuming that the owner takes care of the motor. I can pull out 1,000 instancs where a domestic failed before 100,000 miles, the same goes for an import. Unless your comparing import vs domestic with the exact same maintenance (preventative done at same intervals) it's a moot point. You may as well compare apples to oranges as faras i'm concerend....

Since every body else has their little "favorable" stories i'll share mine.
I bought my car with 35k in the ticker, I beat the piss out of it to 100k..at that point I turbocharged it (6psi) ran it rich as hell and beat the piss out of it more (took the revs up to almost 7,000 rpm when redline was 6,250) continued to beat it till it had 120K on the ol'e ticker...The oil drained (every 2,500 miles) practically the same color as it went in....I pulled the motor sold it to a buddy who has since put 40k+ maintenance free miles on it...still tickes away like no other......I don't expect that motor to give up anytime soon, it runs like it's still new with almost 180K on it...oh it was an import....

yup. You can "blow up" anything.
I grew up poor and we barely could repair our vehicles yet alone do "preventive maintenance". Although being poor at the time I was driving stuff like 302 Fords into the ground overheating until the engine would not run anymore. Let it cool off and start it up to drive it again! Worst that would happen is I'd need a head gasket.
Any jap 4 banger I've did that to would be toast.

Those 20/22R Toy engines lasted a long time. But if anyone says they never changed the front seal around the oil pump cover or the timing chain during the 300k miles is lying or had a freak, but most likely lying. Them engines DID last though. The most gutless thing I've driven but they lasted.

We had a 400 Dodge in a 76 crew cab that had about 150K or better when my dad bought it from a guy I worked with in 1987. The guy we got it from had a HUGE camper on it and towed a boat all across the US. I knoe because I had to remove this 200 Lb 3 foot long bumper extension off of the back of the truck when we removed the mammoth camper!

My dad bought it for work and LOVED it. It did eat starters and accessories every now and then but he loved the truck for his work (carpenter) because of the 4 doors and drove the piss out of it for almost 10 years driving a few hundred miles per day through the AZ mountains going to his jobs.
He finally gave it up when it had finally started to smoke a little bit and foul the plugs failry often and the 727 tranny was slipping. But after 300K miles of hauling a$$ (my dad drives like me) lugging all of his tools he was not disappointed and highly respected that truck!
The bottom end STILL had no HINT of a knock and when I'd replace the fouled plugs it would STILL rap up to redline in a snap!!!

We've also had 300k miles Ford Econolines with 351 windsors as well only getting timing chains and the usual starters/alternators. All drove a sh*t load but got normal oil changes. Nothing else touched unless it was broke.

I live in Phoenix and see virtually NO japanese cars from the 80's on our streets unless it's battered to sh8t and got blue smoke coming from the exhaust! Most of them cars are smashed and lined up for miles in the scrap yard. I see many more mid 80's GM and some FORD/DODGE cars still running than I Japanese. So it's hard for me to beleive they last longer when I see what I see on our streets.

Sorry for the rant, but it pi$$ed me off after I've read that over and over and my friend (having fallen for the myth) stated his Frontier V6 would out last my 4.7 V8.
His V6 don't tow more than one ATV in the bed compared to me pulling 3 and 4 of them behind mine all the time!

Not that it matters but,
In may 7 year career with m current company I've driven a few trucks all domestic.
The trucks averaged about 60-80K and ran like poopooo. They were all chevy 1500 wt. For the past 4 years i've driven a ford f450 and it's been in the shop at least 2 times a year for problems. In our fleet of trucks we have 12 fords (f450's) and 3 chevs (350's)...one of the chevs cant stay out of the shop ($3,000 in repairs this year alone) I actually brought gas to the guy today that drives ..fuel gauge said 1/2 tank...the past three times that it's been in the shop THIS YEAR it's been for the same fuel related problem..the whole fuel system have been replaced...
My personal preference is this......(remember this is MY personal preference)
for a car it's going to be and import (honda) and only an inport....for a truck it's going to be a domestic and ONLY a domestic...(although the tundra's do look appealing).........I'm done

No sh*t.

I can't look in any direction lately without seeing a new Ram with a "hemi".

Dodge is selling as much or more than ever. They probably now have a chance to compete with Ford's ever popular F150.

I still think the new Dak is UGLY though. But so is the Colorado, Frontier, Taco, etc.

Oh one more thing. A lot of companies (especially imports)like to break down their sales and compare it to a certain "class".
You have to be careful when buying into that. Obviously the Toyota's DO NOT out sell F150's and by the looks of it, probably not the new Ram's either.

I FINALLY saw my first new Tacoma the other day. i thought it was a Chevy at first until I got closer.
