Subject: My 05 dakota is a big surprise! IP: Logged
Message: Picked up my 05 Quad Cab SLT Dakota 4x4 with a 4.7 in it. All is well after driving about 100 miles until I decided to go to the parts store for some gear oil for my 04 Durango. I decide to try out the 4x4 and all I get is a bunch of load noise(sound like someone is beating pots and pans together under my truck). So I put in 2wd and press on with no noise, get down the road a little further and try again and the same thing happens. Finally get it home and look under the truck and see the biggest shock of my life. The front drive shaft is hanging on the exhaust. I get the truck on some ramps and give a closer inspection and find there are no bolts to hold the drive shaft to the front diff, they were never installed. Looks like there is very little damage, a few scrapes here and there and the tranny pan has a ding in it. Sounds like someone really screwed up. What a crappy day

Message: that really sucks. if you play your cards right you could get a extendeed warranty for free. say now that the simplist of tast wasnt completed on the building of your truck your worried that the rest might have problems. Let them know you can no longer trust the quality of dodge. If you bother him enough they might kick you a warranty for free

Message: If something like that was left unfinished makes you wonder what else is! And that would be my argument for a new truck AND extended warranty. And be sure to take the new truck on a test drive before you take it home. that just totally sucks!!

Message: LMFAO!! sorry that was really different. i guess you have to test your 4 wheel drive also. man that reminds me of a really dumb cousin they bought a durango 4x4 but when it snowed the 4 wheel drive did not work so they took it to the dealer to get it fixed and well they said sorry sir you did not buy a 4x4 you bought a 2x4! what a idiot!! you would think they would have figured that out when you go to put it in 4x4 and theres no button? i guess they gonna come out with a automatic 4 wheel drive!! also you could pull for a new truck i think you can return your vehicle within 30 days?? good luck

Message: That's a funny story dak287 about "not" having a 4X4!
But serisouly irunwire, I'd pull that sucker right up FRONT by the showcase where the salesmen would usually be running out to customers like CockRoaches and say "hey man! I just bought this truck and the drive shaft was never connected" or whatever gets some attention.
$10 says someone will pull you aside and take real good care of you and hopefuly give you what you want!

Message: 2005, club cab, 4.7, 5 spd auto, posi rear end, Goodyear Eagle LS:
At 15 miles severe rear end vibration and slightly milder on the front end. Dealer rebalanced, arrived home checked the wheel for proper torqueing and found only 1 wheel within 85 to 115 ft lbs as specified in owners manual. The vibration continued returned to dealer and they took Dakota out and had tires load test balanced. Found 3 out of round tires, replaced same & rebalanced. Now had almost to front vibration and rear vibration was slightly improved. Again had to re-torque wheels to specs. Took bak again and dealer replaced all 4 Eagles and wheels, slightly better. Also, have driven 5 separate 2005 Dakotas and all have same vibration all with mileage less than 25 miles. Anyone else had this problem???

Once appon a time MOPAR used to rule the streets now all they rule are peoples wasted time & money. NO thanks i'm all done owning corporate americas finest s--t heaps. IT pains me to have to say that about my own country but face it our quality or lack thier of SUCKS.

Message: Frank, my truck hasn't had anything like that. I have the Wrangler RT/S tires on the 16" rims though. They seem to be okay for Badyears (which is pretty crappy overall.)
BSASteve: remember that the bad ones are the ones people are most likely to talk about. You don't hear about the good ones because the owners aren't incensed about the problems they're not having.

Message: Dealers suck period. I worked at a dealership fresh out of college for mechanics thinking i would learn something. The horse poo that mechanics at dealerships do is called shotgun diagnosing. They dont try to fix the problem just replace the part that THEY think is causing it, thereby making u spend more of ur valuable time trying sitting at a dealership while they get paid regardless just to guess. Take it to a real mechanic sometime and help those like myself who really try to get to the bottom of the issues!
Needless 2 say 2 months later i quit and found another job at a mom and pops shop and have learned a lot more.... ^_^

Message: I've been of the opinion for a long time that *MOST* but not all mechanics replace what the computer tells them to and do not take the vehicle for a test drive or anything. I've experienced this many times with several vehicles. And even had one tell me that he would have to take the engine apart to find the issue and it would just be cheaper to get a new engine. It's hard to find one of the "old school mechanics" who can tell what's wrong from listening to it.

Message: I agree DAN. thats why they call them Technicians and not mechanics. they hook it up to a computer and the puter tells them if anything is worng. to tell you a story I had when I took my wifes car to the chevy dealership for a wierd sound comming from the transmission. after the tech said nothing worng with it. I said get in the car and I will show you the sound. barely got a mile down the road. and it did it again. he said oh its this spring in the transmission. then he said just add some saturn transmission fluid and it should take care of it. I said how am I suppose to do that. he said what do you mean down the dip stick. I said dip stick the 2000 malibu have a sealed transmission and cant add no fluid nor can you check it. I said thats sad when someone who dont even know chevys know more than the Technicians they have to work on them. needless to say he felt like an ass and I made sure the shop supervisor knew how stupid the people he had working for him.
as far as this computer sysyem they use on the cars. I can say its crap. we use basically the same thing for the B1B Bombers. I can t tell you how many times I had friends tell me they hook up the computer to the plane and it tells them nothings worng. but they know there is. now hardly no one uses them on the planes now. as its just a waste of time.

Message: After about 6 tire balances within the first 20 thousand miles, 1 at Pep Boys, 1 at Sears, 4 at the dealer, I now have a vibration free truck. For awhile it was there continuously no matter what I did, would lessen after a wheel balance, then get worse again over time. Then the last one at Sears seemed to do the trick.

Message: Well at least it was a TIRE problem???
I forget what Goodyear model I had stock on my Dak, but I drove the ever living sh*t out of them going off road spinning the tires on rocks in 4WD going up steep hills balls to the wall and then ran smooth 120 MPH down the highway until I wore them out bald at about 25K miles!
Those here who had watched my off road video's know what I'm talking about.
I had good luck with my tires ....whew~
Hope these el cheapo Pep Boys specials do as good as the Good years did. so far so good though and no more romping offroad like I did before.
