Subject: Ball joints didn't help
IP: Logged

Message:
I just spent the weekend drilling and hammering at 14 rivets on the ball joints on my 98 Dak. After I got the ball joints replaced and took it out on the road guess what, the noises are only about 25% better. It still pops when turning, and clunks when going over bumps. I borrowed all the tools last weekend so it's not the easiest thing for me to keep doing this over and over. What else needs to be replaced??? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are your shocks tight and in good condition? They can clunck and pop if loose or worn out.

Take a look for looseness in the intermediate shaft. That is the shaft that travels from the steering column to the steering box. When the joint wears, it allows the joint to clunk when turning either way.

I did lube my tie rod ends when I had everything apart. Nothing looked like it was in good shape. Many of the rubber parts were cracked. I probably need to replace everything. I'm selling the truck as soon as it's payed off (June), and I'm just trying to narrow down the first things to replace so I don't replace anything that isn't really necessary, as I don't have the cash and won't have it for more than 6 more months. As to whether shocks are worn out, how do you tell? I don't trust any of the repair shops in this town anymore. Thanks...

Control arm bushings are a common failure on a Dakota front end and are very often mistaken for ball joints if the diagnosis is based on noise only.
