Message: I totally love my truck, don't get me wrong but I've only had it for a month. Thanks to everyone that helped me with my brake problem, but I'm having another as well. About a week ago, my engine light turned on. I called a mechanic, they let me know that it could have been something minor, since I checked oil, fluids, etc. . He said it could have just been because I didn't tighten my gas cap enough. He said the light would eventually just reset itself if I made a few trips without it recognizing any problems, and 3 days later the light turned off. Well I just noticed my light just turned on again, but I haven't pumped any gas. It's been raining very heavily here, not sure if that has anything to do with it, I'm just very concerned about my engine light being on. Has anyone else had a problem like this before?

Message: You can get the code by turning the ignition like this. on off on off on (without starting the truck) if you do it right, it should show stored codes in the odomiter.. Just tell us the code, and someone will steer you in the right direction..
It dosen't work on all trucks, it works on my 00 but didn't on my 98.
Hope I helped :-)

Message: hey joe,
i know its frustrating because you just got the truck and its having some problems but i wouldnt worry. Typicially a vehicle is most unreliable in the first 6 months after it was just purchased. With so many electronics and tight tolerances on vehicles now a days things need a break in time. sometimes defective parts take a little driving to turn up, when it does it will be replaced. just give it a couple months and let the dealership take care of the few bugs you have. it will all turn out fine

Message: Replace the gas cap. A new one costs $15.00 from the dealer. Reset the PCM.
Is it an 05 or did you buy a used truck?

Message: Ok guys, thanks daffydak for teachin me how to show the problem. Did what u said, and got a "P0442" so I looked it up on google and it says
"This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine."
and then:
Possible Solutions
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
I've tried reapplying the gas cap the first time it did this, and it went off. Without even touching the gas cap, 2 days later I was having the same problem, So i am guessing I need to "Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses" my question is, is this something a mechanic should do or an easy fix thing? And, what's the damage going to be? I just bought the truck a little over a month ago, but I have a 2 year 30,000 mile warranty.
Thanks

Message: You didn't mention REPLACING the gas cap... I'd try that. I'm betting your current gas cap isn't sealing properly.
I'd try that and then work from there if you get the light after resetting the PCM (or having someone clear the code)...

Message: No problem, I'm glad I could help.
It's probably the fuel cap, or the EVAP hoses somewhere could be loose or unhooked.. at least it's not a major thing :-) Since you have the warranty, take it in. Let them worry about tracking down the leak......

Message: I had the same code (P0442) once. Here's what I did to fix it:
First I took the gas cap off and blew out the little valve in the center of it with compressed air (had a little crud in it). I then cleaned the rubber O-ring seal on the cap with WD40 (had a little rust residue on it). I then cleaned a small amount of surface rust off the lip of the filler tube where the seal meets with some emery cloth.
I then got to looking at the hoses going into the charcoal canister. On mine the middle one may have been leaking. It had a very small hair line crack in it, where it slips over the canister's nipple. I replaced the hose and put a couple of fuel line clamps over the ends for good measure.
I don't know which issue was the culprit, but doing this fixed the problem.
The light will go out on it's own after driving it while if you don't want to reset it. It may take serveral cycles to go out. Took mine about a week to go out.

Message: My o2 dak had some dry rotted vac hoses. discovered this 2 weeks after bought at a dealer who only sells "certified used vehicles" what a crock. the check list even said it was checked. maybe they used a wide tooth comb and gray or black gloves. what a scam. just venting. good luck with that. you have 7/70 or 8/80? they should take care of you. is that worth a day without your truck? no, maybe

Message: btw my yota i had to cross or short a circuit with a paper clip.. I read the chilton manual to discover this. look up error codes in index and it should tell you how to extract them ooooorrrrrrr,,,,,,,,,,, parts stores code scan for free. they do exactly what the books say. haines or chilton. haines on demand is best. but only the pros have that resource. not nec for this.
