Message: Different.
My 01 Dakota.
$850.00 to repair transmission on 01 Dak with 63,000 miles. No towing, no racing.
$2400.00 so far in brakes and ball joints.
Instrument cluster that flashes garbage and dies.
At least when Toyota fcuks up (it was an assembly problem with a lock nut, not a design flaw) they pony up and fix the problem.
Dodge has numerous systemic design flaws, with not just the Dakota but with all their vehicles, and instead of doing the right thing for their customers they run, evade and deny.
That's why Dodge is different.

Message: MythBuster, I'm not going to defend ANY brand here, BUT lets face it, all of the information really means nothing. A TSB isn't required by the feds. A TSB is not FREE work like a recall is. A TSB is issued to help technicians diagnose and fix a common problem with that vehicle. In many cases it's consumer warranty complaints to the service dept that eventually gets a TSB issued. Really that's it! Most of us aren't meant to get the TSB information, but thanks to the internet, nothing is sacred.
Recalls can be voluntary and/or required by the Feds. Yes, every vehicle gets recalls. Some more than others. Some manufacturers do it voluntarily and others wait for the Federal Government to demand it. DC seems to be one of those manufacturers that doesn't like to issue recalls voluntarily. This goes back to the early 90's with the Neons, Stratus etc. Ford likes to extend a warranty instead of recalling. For example..95-97 Contours & Mystiques have their coil spring and engine wiring warranty extended to 10 years or 100K miles. No recall. It only gets fixed if it's broken. Their cooling fans on the other hand would short out and catch fire so they did a voluntary recall. Here would be Dodge in the same situation..."We don't see a problem with the cooling fans....we've determind it to be operator error". That's my issue. I like to see voluntary recalls because it shows acknowledgement of a problem and a willingness to fix it. If not for saftey then to prove that as a manufacturere you stand completely behind your product. Dodge hasn't caught on to that yet.
I'd love to see out of that list of recalls, how many are voluntary. I think that would say more than anything else.

Message: Figols,
I’m aware that TSB’s don’t mean everything. The listing of them is simply to illustrate the point that Toyota’s like just everything have problems. I’ve never had problem understanding that simple truth, but there are some here that like to give Toys a mythological status, which is why I like to enlighten them, even though they don’t want to hear it.
Did you even try following the links I posted?
Like this one in the Toy forum where Tundra owners are crying about their bad transmissions:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/t347907-tranny_problem.html
Sound familiar??? Do transmission problems only happen with Toyota’s? No, it happens with Dodge’s, GM’s, Ford’s, etc. also. What I’m saying is $hit happens to every make of vehicle’s and Toyota’s are no exception.
As for recalls, see what the Toyota owners here have to say about Toyota recalls. Doesn’t sound to me like they bend over backwards for their customers by the tone of the poster:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/t293730-tundra_recalls__any_product_recalls___03_tundra.html
As for voluntary recalls Dodge is no worse than GM either. Again, if you’d followed my link to
http://www.pistonslap.com/ You’d have seen the problems GM owner’s are having with a serious engine flaw and how GM is denying it or extending their warranties instead if fixing the problem.
So is Dodge guilty of this behavior too? Sure they are…just like everyone else. That is my point.

Message: as always a good post by 'ol myth. i have personally had a lemon from toyota. only nothing broke 3 times, just about every part broke atleast once though, so i was stuck with the POS so i know first hand that toyota isnt the second coming of christ like some of you play it out to be. also look at the cost of these trucks. the dakotas are easily 5-7k less and comes with a longer powertrain warranty. take the money saved buy a 100k bumper to bumper extended warranty for under 2 grand and laugh all the way to the bank with the other 3-5 grand knowing ur covered if anything does happen
