Subject: tie down hooks

This may be a stupid question but I have a bedliner that was in the truck (99 CC) when I bought it. Are there any tie down hooks in the front of the bed. My bedliner (All*Star?) has two cut outs in the rear near the tailgate but nothing up front. Are there hooks under there somewhere?

I've only had the truck for two weeks so I'll probably be asking a lot of stupid questions on a regular basis for a while.

Thanks

Yes, there are 2 in the floor. They are a pain in the butt to get a motorcycle tie down into. You are better off to fab tiedowns in the bed.

Not a stupid question at all... I have the same bedliner - up front there are two plugs, right? It's really a pain to try to tie down a tarp too.

i found that if you use some hooks used for climbing and then hook your tie down straps to those it is much easier, but make sure to get good ones.

I thought those plugs were for drainage or something.

The carbiner (sp?) is a great idea. If I take the plugs out, will water sit in there?

Thanks again

Na those in bed tiedowns are actually on the frame so DC put holes clean through the bed, this allows most water to drain, then there are 3 very small almost undetectable slots in the front of the bed where the bed and the forward bed wall comes together that allows the rest of the water to drain out.

I went to the hardware store and bought some heavy duty hook. I don't know what they're called but they look like a ? with a spring loaded piece of metal closing the loop. Then there is a ring on the end that I can hook my tie downs to. Well, those turned out to be ineffective for my dirt bike, but do work in other situations. I ended up just drilling two holes in each little box-like protrusion in the front top corners of the bed. One to insert an eye bolt and the other to reach the back of the eye bolt to bolt it on. It works really great. Its very strong, and has a much better angle to tie things down. I think Dodge should have really done something for tie downs. If you make a truck, don't you figure that some people are going to haul stuff with it?!?!? Sorry, that's my venting for now.

I totally agree! I took a load of stuff to the dump, other than the two tie downs by the tailgate, I couldn't get the tarp fastened securely, and the dump here will refuse you without a tarp. I ended up weighing down the sides with 2x4s and stopping every 10 min. or so to fasten it down again as it was flapping in the breeze. Also, it's hard to fit anything through the existing ones, I put my (expensive) bicycle in my truck & drive to meet friends for a 40k cycle every weekend. I can't lock it to the tie-downs because the lock cable won't fit through. So, if I have to stop, or leave it for a minute, I take it out and lock it to the bumper. Very annoying, although I'm kind of anal about keeping my truck meticulous, every once in a while I like to use it as a truck.

Yeah, I'm with you guys. I don't use it as a truck too often but when I need to I want it to work. I ran into the same prob as Lesley with the back hooks. I have an aftermarket fullsize tire and rim for a spare (what'd he do with original?) so I needed to lock it in the bed. I bought a bike cable lock but couldn't fit it through that dinky tie down hook so I had to go buy a separate pad lock to attach the cable lock to.

Does someone make an aftermarket item that goes in the bed (since we don't...or at least I don't...have stake holes) other than using eye hooks? I'm sure I could have something made but it seems ridiculous for such a commonly used item.

Thanks again.

I'll try to get ahold of a digital camara and take pictures of what I did to get some decent tie down points.

Ron, the tie down bars in the front of the Dakota are under the floor. The Dodge bed liner has cut outs for them and plugs that fit in the cut outs of the bed liner. I find thoughs bars are in the wrong place to tie things up against the wall of the cab. Plus you have to fish a line under the floor and wrap your fingers around the bars to fasten a rope. I bought four fasteners that have hooks on both ends. I can easily hook the bar under the floor and tie a rope around the other and of the hook to tie things down. When you don't need them, unhook it from the bar and throw them under the seat. Those hooks are great for anyone with the new body style that has to haul stuff.

I have two sets of hooks on my Quad,in addition to the ones in the floor. I thought all the truck models did as well.

I've been happy with the "Motorcycle Tie-Downs" from Keeper:
http://www.keepercorp.com/prod/btd.htm
The hooks on the end just slip into those under-bed tie-down points. I also use the "Movable Anchor Point" by the same manufacturer:
http://www.keepercorp.com/prod/ptap.htm
It allows me to put an anchor point anywhere along the bed rail.

I found all this stuff on the rack at my local hardware store.

I tried the bedrail mounts, but they are too high up to hold anything down... and they can't be used to lash something to the front of the bed, like you should. I know that Dakota's accellerate quickly, but the most force is from braking. I want to keep things forward, and tight, so that it won't work your ropes loose. But on the later Dakota's you end up with... a frayed knot.

Does anyone remember the old 1980-1986 D50? That had two bars on each side that were perfect for tiedowns... Why don't the have them on the newer trucks too? Each one was mounted low between the fender well and the corners of the bed. And they worked great to strengthen the bed. Only trouble I remember was that you had to take them out and attatcb them through any bedliner... but that helps to tie the bedliner down. Gee I miss that old D-50... but then again... Hmmmmm? Why did Dodge lose a great feature like that?

Today was the first time i had to tie anything down in the bed of the Dakota since my purchase 2 months ago. The first thing i noticed was that it was a pain in the @$$. Me and my roommate bought a new entertainment unit type thing from a place around here called just cabinets (although they sold a lot more than just cabinets... lol). As soon as we put the box in the bed, i was confused, the box sat over top of the two hooks in the front of the bed, and the box was about 2 inches too short for me to use the rear hooks. What a stupid design Dodge... what a stupid design. Other than the the truck is perfect.
