Message: Has anyone got firsthand experience towing a 2WD 5 speed Dakota behind a motorhome without removing the driveshaft as the owners manual suggest's. Any trans. damage possible?
Thankx

Message: Not sure about a 5 speed but I have a 93 with auto trans and I disconnect the driveshaft and secure it with a cable under the bed. I can do this in 10 minutes and hook it back up in the same time. Not the easiest way to get it to tow but cannot afford a trans pump or a drive shaft disconnect system. Are you going to hook up a braking system for the Dakota? I am going to use a surge brake system that cost $500 as I get a little worried about stopping with almost 4,000 pounds pushing my 31 footer.

Message: I'm not sure why they would recommend disconnecting the driveshaft when towing a manual tranny. If it's in neutral there is no lubrication problem because the oil gets slung around by the spinning gears (from the driveline providing power) just as it would if the engine were spinning the gears.
The problem with automatics is the oil is presurized by and pumped by the torque converter. This doesn't happen if the driveshaft is turning the tranny.
Your best bet is to consult expert mechanincs at a good transmission shop, or at a dealership you have confidence in. You should be able to find out the real answer for your vehicle that way.
