Just a question to anyone out there. It seems my 4.7L V8 is producing more yellow paste sludge in the oil filler neck this winter then last winter. I'm using 5w30 full synthetic now versus conventional oil last winter. Would this make a difference? I'm trying to keep it clean in the oil filler neck but there was a ton of paste in there today. I noticed my operating oil pressure drop slightly since we've had the last blast of cold/warm weather? Is this a problem or will it go back to normal when I change the oil again?

Damn I'm glad our winters are so mild here in Arizona. (Been running with the windows down during the day).

Seems the problem is the PLASTIC filler neck, as convienient as it is, it operates cooler then the engine to the point where humidity condensates inside it.

Maybe remove that little bugger and have a local machine shop make one out of ALUMINUM. That would EASILY run near the engine temperature thus illiminating the problem all together.

After you get a prototype of it have them made and sell them to the other several thousands of Dak owners in that climate.

I'm sure they would sell :-)

Yeah it's a problem, but something very common in Dakota's. Like Graphite said the cold plastic filler neck causes condensation to build up in the filler neck,,, too bad the PCV valve in the filler tube doesn't suck the condensation out of there before it has a chance to form that yellow sludge.

When my 00 had about 100K on it I removed the filler heck to get all the caked up buildup off the inside of the filler neck. There was a little bit of the semi-solidified sludge that was dripping down into the block (could feel it with my finger). I cleaned this up with a rag and some carb cleaner. Be very cautious about trying to clean up sludge, if any of the sludge particles fall into the engine they will eventually find thier way to the oil pump pickup tube. If there are enough particles to block the screen they will starve the engine of oil and burn up the engine. I cleaned the filler neck so the hard crap in the filler neck didn't start flaking off and getting clogged in the oil pump pick-up.

Since your running synthetic oil I think your doing the best thing possible for the oil. But, if your driving a lot of short trips can this lead to the condensation build since the engine is not at operating temps for a long time which helps to burn off condensation.
