Message: I'm thinking that you can tell by the finish on your bumpers.
Chrome & gray = SLT
Body color & black = Sport
Black & gray = cheap

Message: I've got the same truck.
This isn't supposed to sound like I'm calling you stupid but it's going to anyway.
The sport has "sport" written on the side of the doors.
The SLT has a dual-color paint scheme on the bumpers and chrome grille while the sport has body colored bumpers and grille.
The brochure also says the SLT came with hood insulation while the sport did not.
Hope this helps.

Message: Out of curiosity, when did these bumper things come into play? I got a friend looking into buying a used dakota off of a "personal sales lot" here. It's a lot where people bring their peronal vehicles to sell and the lot owner gets a fee for the space. The truck has no badges. Just a sticker in the window indicting the usual - milage, year, engine, power options.

Message: Easy way of telling exactly what trim package your truck is. Write down your VIN, and call a dodge dealership and give them the VIN and ask them. They have a record of EVERY factory option installed on that vehicle. This will also help you identify any aftermarket parts and give you some direction when it comes time to repair it.

Message: Sport: Bumpers and grill the same as body color. 2001 would have originally had the sport decals on the side, but were probably removed.
SLT: Chrome bumpers and grill, SLT badging on doors. Underhood and body insulation.

Message: I own a dakota sport myself and one thing that I have noticed on the sport models only is the interior.
The sports have bucket seats with a center console between them. Most other models have either a bench seat or a seat where the back flips down in the center to create an armrest.
I'm not sure if that means anything but it is just something I have noticed about the sport models.

Message: Rayanne.
Take your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to a Dodge service or parts department. They should be able to tell you from that.
Also, any knowledgeable salesman who has been at a Dodge dealership for a time should be able to tell you just by looking at it.

Message: Trip5981, not true with the bucket seats and console. That was an option. My 2001 Sport has a bench seat with flip up center armrest. As for the bumper thing, (in 2001 anyway) the R/T has the entire front bumper painted body color, the Sport has the front bumper body color with the exception of the top of it which is black. Same as what Broeheem says.

Message: My 02 SLT Plus has no hood insulation. Not that I can hear the engine from inside my cab anyway.
And as said above - factory chrome grill/bumpers and it's an SLT, if they match the paint it's a sport.
VIN will verify
