i just want to tell all you other dakota owners out there about the problem with my 01 dakota, 2 wheel drive. i just had both ball joints replaced today for free. it turns out that my passenger side was broken and my driver side was beginning to fail. luckily nothing major occurred before this.

i have 77k right now. around maybe 50k or so, i began to hear a "clunking noise" when going over speed bumps, minor bumps in the road, and even on flat surfaces after bumps. the noise came from the front suspension. it got progressively more pronounced as time went on.

get your trucks checked out and be professional about it so they wont mess around with you.

good luck all.

DC has got other brands with the very same problem
but you think they will own up to it? My wifes
01 Dodge Caravan with 53k has bad upper ball
joints.

It's just too bad auto makers do nothing to keep
thier junk safe unless they are told to.

Life to them comes second. Their shareholders are
number one on their list.

Are you sure it's ball joints on the Caravan and not the sway bar end links and bushings?

I've gone through two sets on my 02. I've never heard of a ball joint problem with the Caravan. Sounds the same, real nasty clunk on bumps.

I had my balljoints replaced under waranty at about 54k on my 2001. one side had excessive play the other was on its way too. The steering feels much tighter and responsive with the new ball joints and better over bumps. FREEEBIE, zip, zero, zilch, NADA!

YOU put the same old POS balls in, I on the other hand paid a few bucks to never have the problem again. the boys at your local Dodge delaer are awaiting your return so they can get you for $400 a joint once your warrenty is out as they replace the control arm at the same time.

To add to what "yeah but" said, when they replace the entire control arm, you're gonna have to pay for a total front end alignment, as well. And it ain't so easy, because it's bolts in slots. No eccentric adjusters, like in the good trucks.
