I was installing new brake callipers today and found one of the mounting holes with stipped threads. I think the bolt size is 9mm 1.25

Can I repair this with helicoils? I've never used these before and didn't know how strong/safe they are. thanks, Scott

You can get oversized replacement caliper bolts with self-tapping threads. The NAPA store here had them when I needed them for my 1999 Dakota. I was too lazy to do the heli-coil.

Most parts stores sell helicoil kits for brake calipers. I have one up front on mine.

The bolts JasonB talks about sound like a bad idea IMHO.

I just helicoiled mine about a month ago, in pepboys yesterday, I say they had a helicoil type kit and you just had to grab a 3/8" drill bit. when I did mine, just for a little added safety, I used high strengh thread lock on the helicoil, and let it cure before I put my caliper pins on. Putting the helicoils in wasn't bad at all. just make sure the tap is straight when you start it. The reason I went with the helicoil is that I heard the Napa bolts are 1 time use only and won't save much money since they run at least $15.00 each.

Sounds like this is a pretty common occurance. I discovered mine after having the brakes checked during yearly inspection at Midas Mufflers. They identified a problem with the caliper but wanted too much for parts and labor so I had them put it back together for me to take care of myself. I found it stripped when I got it home and started removing it. Won't be going there again.

Actually, for some of the older Dakotas (not sure about newers, though) Dodge put together a helicoil kit and referenced it in a TSB to avoid replacing the steering knuckle.

Go for it!!!

The Heli-coil kit is actually stronger than the cast iron threads, go with the Helicoil kit.

Self tapping caliper bolts are used to get you out of a pinch, they are a 1 time ONLY use item. As the bolt is screwed in it cuts new threads and leaves metal particles in the threads, when the self tapping bolt is removed, these metal particles can bind in the threads and strip out the hole again ;-(

I think the self tapping bolts are a quick fix for mechanics, not a true fix. What's easier screwing in a self tapping bolt of drilling, tapping and inserting a Heli-coil.
