Subject: Turn signal flasher 2000 Dakota; HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
I bought a replacement flasher for my Dakota since my turn signals and hazards only flash sporatically. They either work or they stay on solid. Any thoughts on if this is the right part? I don't want to open it if it's not.

Also, I don't know where to install it. I figured it went in the fuse compartment, but I don't see an old one in there. I do see a recepticle that should fit this flasher, but shouldn't there be an old one to remove? I also looked in the power distribution center, but no luck. Of course, the fuse compartment is only labeled for the fuses, not the other components and the manual is useless. Any thoughts?

It's a 2000 Dakota v6 3.9 2x4 !!!

Thanks!

When you activate the turn signals both ways, do the lights front/rear come on and stay steady? Does it do this on both sides?

Yes, it doesn't seem to matter right or left. When I put the left turn signal on (for example), the left (front and back) turn signal lights turn on solid and on the dash the left turn indicator is solid as well. Right does the same. If I put the hazards on, all 4 lights turn on solid as well as both dash indicator lights. I have not been able to notice any pattern to when it works or not. Sometimes I'm sitting at a stoplight and they will work for 30 seconds then just turn solid. Other times they go solid as soon as I turn them on. Other times they will work for a full minute, so I turn them off. It's cold here now, but it seems to act the same if it's 40*F or -30*F. Any clues?

Sounds consistent with a problem with the flasher unit.

If they work some times, but not all the times, then the flasher unit is present, just not yet where you've been able to find it. Wish I could point you in right direction, but mine is a 1995.

It will be under the dash somewhere; the clicking sound you hear when the turn signals are on is the actual contacts of the flasher moving back and forth. You may have to wait until they are working and just track it down "by ear". Once you find it, you'll be able to put your finger on the unit and feel it clicking, too. Again, not sure where it is on a 2000, but it will be somewhere in the driver's area under the dash, or possibly on the lower portion of the column.

Once you find the unit, make sure it's completely plugged in - it could be suffering from poor contact due to vibration while driving. Once you find it, you can always do a swap test with the new unit you bought.

Oh, by the way -- your new flasher unit is an electrical item, so you may not be able to return it to the parts store anyway....

Hope this helps.......

Mine went on my 2000 qc if it is the same part mine was green. It was located up under the dash on the drivers side. My flashers would do the same thing.

Thanks guys, I didn't realize that it made the clicking sound... great advice! I found it under the dash sort of above the parking break. I replaced it and so far it has worked great!

Thank you!!!
