Subject: kids stealing wheel plugs IP: Logged
Message: Neighborhood kids are stealing the little plastic center wheel plugs (I don't know the proper name of this part), with the ram's head. Wife went to the Stealer for replacements and a) the parts guy said he's selling tons of them because so many are being stollen, and b) the cheezy little plastic parts are $25 apiece. Aside from dropping them (or their rotten parents) with a 30.06, is this a part I can get a cheap replacement for (without the coveted ram's head) at any auto parts store?

Message: You got the Stealership part right but mine only chages something like $13.65 each for them. Someone got all 4 of my wife's off her Durango and I lost 2 after a trip from having my tires rotated. I think mine was from the tire tech not putting them in all the way.
I have thought about using some hot glue or spots of epoxy to keep mine in place and make thema li'l harder to get off. Just enough to make them stay yet able to get them off if I really want them off. More of a deterent I guess.

Message: If you epoxy or glue them in place, chances are the next tech who balances the wheels will break them when he slides the wheel on the balance machine.
Take a carriage bolt (will have to experiment with the length), and epoxy it into the back of the center cap. Take a short length of strap steel (the flat kind with the holes down the length) and a nut and make your own bolt-down-from-the-back center cap locks......

Message: I had some little bastards steal my chrome tire valve nuts off my tires. Happened a couple times. I guess one kid got them and put them on his bike and so of course every little puke in the neighbourhood was out for them. I caught one of them with them on his bike and got two back and scared the hell out of him. Never happened again. It worked out pretty good cuz his dad was a "car guy" and probably let him have it.

Message: Cap Thief,
I was only thinking of a spot on a couple of the inner edges just to make them harder to get off. With the tire off you'd have more access to the cap from the inside and abre to get them off a lot easier without damaging them. I understand the epoxy would be harder to get off but a simple hot glue gun should still be soft even after it is cooled off.
Like I said, it would be more of a deterent than a preventative measure. Make it harder for them.
