 Subject: WTF - Rear Diff Whine - HELP

Ok so i have this awful, constant whine in my rear differential. Ive done research and thought i would give changing the fluid and adding friction modifier a try. I did this and the whine was still there, still just as loud. So i figured it must be damaged and took my truck into a shop. The mechanic assured me that was infact the rear differential making the noise and it needs a rebuild. So my truck is under warranty and told them to go ahead and rebuild it. So i only end up paying about 200 hundred overall the warranty paid 800 or something like that. So i get my truck back today and the mechanic said the tires also were part of the whining so it still does it a little bit. And when I eventually get in my truck and drive and it does not sound any better than it did before. Now i dont know what to do. Im almosy positive its not my tires making that noise, its sooo loud and def coming fom the rear end. Im so pissed and i despise driving this truck with this noise. So im wondering do you think the mechanic might have forgot friction modififer?? Do you think just because he didnt add it it would still make the noise??Any ideas on what i should do??

You don't say how many mile or what kind of use. But the corporate rears are pretty famous for lunching the left carrier bearing at around 60K miles or so. The symptom is a low pitched whining/droning noise from the rear that changes with load. This is the key. It must change with load, or it's not a carrier bearing.
Did you talk to the mechanic who did the rebuild? Did they say anything about the condition of the parts removed?

It has about 91,000 miles on it. And what do you mean by changing with load??
The noise itself is constant i always hear it except if im going reeaal slow like 5 mph. It changes in pitch - the faster i go the higher pitched noise it is.
I didnt talk to the mechanic too long so i dont know the condition of the parts, i believe he did say that a pinion gear or bearing or something pinion was worn.
This noise is making me go crazy, its all i hear when im in my truck and what makes me more aggravated is that i just payed like 250 dollars to have it fixed. WTF
