Subject: where is the thermostat '97 IP: Logged
Message: Where do I find the thermostat on a 97 dodge dakota with a 5.2?
I'm guessing the thermostat is the problem. It gets hot real fast (pegs out) then drops down 50 degrees. Moves back up and down over and over. The heater only blows hot when the temp is dropping.
Sound like I'm on the right track?

Message: If your motor is set up like my v6, then just follow the upper radiator hose and the thermostat will be at the end opposite your radiator on top of the intake manifold.

Message: Easy to change, pain in the ass to remove the old gsket due to it's location... just loosen the two bolts up on the thermostat housing, pull it off, remove the thermostat, block the opening and scrape off the old gasket, put the new thermostat in (make sure you don't put it in upside down), and reinstall everything with a new gasket and some RTV sealant. Pretty simple though it'll take you a lil time cuz of the location.

Message: I chose to remove the A/C compressor when I changed mine. If I remember right, after removing the serpentine belt, there were 2 electrical connections, 5 bolts and I disconnected the front injector on that side. It was very easy to access from there and only took me about an hour. The location is exactly where greendak says...behing the alternator at the end of the upper radiator hose.
Good luck.
