Subject: wheel bearing ?

I have a grinding noise that sounds like its coming from the front wheel...only when I do like a 90 degree turn, turning left. I got to drive a long ways this weekend. Should I have it replaced before hand. Do you think that it is definitely a wheel bearing problem ?

On my '01 the front passenger bearing took a crap. At first I thought a belt slipped in my tire. It very gradually got worse. I went to rotate the tires and notice the front wheel had some play. After a trip to the dodge dealer and $150 - $200 new front hub (because the the bearings are factory pressed into a new hub, bearings not sold separetly) problem solved.
You can reuse the spindle nut once maybe twice, but use threadlock and make sure to torque that nut 175#.

Hope it helps,
Jeff

You can get the bearing seperate from the hub, but the Dodge dealer won't tell you that. I replaced both sides on my 00 CC last year and as I remember the bearings were around $40 each. There's only 1 bearing per side, it's a sealed dual roller bearing.

I replaced them myself, but I would take it to a shop to have them pressed out-in if I had to do it again. It took an old 1 7/8" trailer ball, a lot of pounding and some heat from a propane torch applied to the hub before they would come out. Installing them was a snap though, hub in the oven at 180 degrees and the bearing in the freezer at 20 degrees made enough clearance for them to slip together easily.

If it's the wheel bearing that's making noise I would have it replaced before hitting the interstate.
