Subject: Ball Joint Recall

Message:
Have a 2000 Ext Cab 4x4 with v-8 magnum. took it in for the ball joint recall. After new joint installed immediately had a squeling noise from the front when the first driving the truck. Took it back and service man said the drive shaft ball and socket need to be replaced (totally worn out). $638 to replace. Never had a problem until the ball joints were replaced. Obviously Chryler says not their problem. Truck has 78,000 miles on it. Seems odd to me. Anyone else with similar problems?

Bull! totally worn out right after you had the ball joints replaced!?! Makes almost no sense. Take it back and demand they fix it for free.

Did you ever consider getting a second opinion? When you do this, DO NOT tell the second shop why. Just ask for a complete inspection for the noise you describe, then compare what they tell with what you have already been told. If you tell them why you want it, often the "second opinion" will be slanted and the inspection will be limited to what you were previously told.

OMGI, I think Husker59 is referring to the double cardan joint on the transfer case end of the front drive shaft. Mine went bad last summer and made a heck of a racket. I took the front shaft out and had the joints replaced at both ends by a local shop. Had the shaft back and installed a couple of hours later. Parts and labor - $159.
