Subject: CANT pass DEQ.... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1989 Dodge Dakota, 2.5L, 5 speed, all stock exhuast, suspension, etc.
Here are the readings from my latest DEQ trial:
THC ---FAIL
Standard 4.00
MY reading 53.89
CO ---FAIL
Standard 85.0
MY reading 301.4
NOx ---PASS
Standard 4.62
MY reading .18
There is a code that the computer is throwing...it says "A/C relay" but I dont even have A/C so whats that all about? I dont see how that would have an effect on running rich & emmisions, so it may not even be part of it but I dont know.
The truck is running rich and as you could see it has way to high of emmisions. What are the possible reasons for this, and what should I try replacing?
I have replaced:
-MAP sensor
-Fuel Pressure Regulator
-Done a regular tune up...
Also, there was unburned gas (it was black for some reason) comming out of the tail pipe when I would rev it up but it stopped
Would my catalytic converter be a problem?
Thanks,

Message: WOW!, Well it is possible it is you catalytic converter. Make sure you got a good clean air filter. Some how your getting too much fuel (stuck open injectors, not enough air, or cat is not working properly)
-One way you can see if you cat is working is somehow check the temperature difference at the inlet and outlets of the cat, they should be a good difference.
-first would check for temp diff at the cat.
-using lot more fuel than usual?

Message: EGR valve/solenoid
more the { sensor/solenoid } , but you can't get separately from EGR valve
About $ 70.00 for package
If cat was bad = would fail all 3 especially
on the RUN part of test

That has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever seen posted on ANY forum! That is one of the biggest reasons people use these forums (which there are MANY of concerning almost everything under the sun), is to get advice & help.

Message: I don't know what my numbers are, but I just replaced my bad EGR today, and it made a decent amount of difference in how the truck ran.. what state are you in the you have to test emissions? here in NY we just added a test of emmisions components, but only for 96 and newer.

Nope. A bad EGR can't make the HC emissions THAT high and yet pass NOx. It's probably either the catcon or a bad injector, or O2 sensor.
