Message: Before I got my beloved Dakota.
I bought a beater Chevy El Camino from a friend.
All of the gauges were busted.
the car wasn't electronic BEFORE my mods but like Intense I made my gauges from scratch.
I ripped out the stock stuff. installed a new bezel I made with the small chrome gauges, water temp, volts, oil pressure, etc. Installed a tach on one side and using an identical tach I pulled off the face plate and etched a new face for it to make a matching speedometer!
It f**king worked!!!!!!!!
before I got to fix up the POS anymore I made it to the point I could trade in my other car for the Dakota (was still upside down though).
The tach reads off of pulses. All i did was take the original speedo housing where the cable plugged in and made a starwheel thing with holes. Calculated the gears down to that starwheel to give the correct amount of pulses to move the needle accurately.
Of course your Dakota already has pulses coming from the speedo sensor. You would just need a circuit to feed the tach with a new face plate. Divide the pulses down to be accurate using some electronics.
With what I've learned since doing that 2 years ago I could make a digital readout speedometer.
But I'm not about to do that to my Dak. But my ATV is another story.
Anyway. Just an idea.
