Subject: Upside down ias shocks IP: Logged
Message: I just bought some Edelbrock IAS performance shocks for my 99 CC 4x4 dak and I heard that you are suppose to install the shocks "upside down" from what a usual shock would be done as. Aka the boot is on the downside rather than pointing up? is this true? does it matter?

Message: Yes, it's true, and yes, it matters. I believe that for the shock valving to work correctly, it must be mounted this way.

Message: I have them on my '00 QC 4x4. I really like them on the rear, but on the front they made it a little too stiff. I replaced the fronts with Monroe VST(?)shocks, but kept the IAS shocks on the rear. The IAS shocks totally eliminated the bounce I was getting since new while towing a trailer and they also greatly reduced rear axle hop on washboard roads. With the IAS shocks on the front they eliminated the front end bounce that would occur over dips, but on the higway they made the steering wheel kick on expansion joints. The Monroe shocks on the front gave me a perfect balance, which is what I wanted.
They do mount upside down, but it should tell you that in the directions.

Message: do the shocks change your ride height? I was
thinking about getting some for my R/T but
wasn't sure if it would raise it because if the
inertia valve not letting the shocks "sag"......

Message: Ive got Bilsteins on my Durango and spoke with very friendly tech support about mounting. They said it did not matter as to function of the shocks to mount upside or right-side up.
However..they said i should mount them upside down for my application as there could be clearance issues with my exhaust melting the boot otherwise. They also said the boots were merely cosmetic.

Message: The IAS's did not change my ride hight, although I have an 02 QC AWD. The shock valving won't "hold" the truck up, as it just adjusts how it reacts to wheel travel.

Message: Shocks will never change ride height. Ride height is determind by spring rate(or torsion bar setting). Basically, Shocks only control the bounce of the wheel as it goes over bumps. Better shocks react more quickly thus keeping the tires in better contact with the road surface. A stiffer shock will not allow the suspension to compress as quickly as a softer shock. Variable shocks will allow the suspension to compress at different rates along the length of it's travel. Without shocks your tires will just bounce over every little imperfection in the road.

Message: I have heard some people thinking that a gas charged shock may up the ride height, but if you think about it, that would be quite a gas charge in that little ol' shock tube. :-)

Message: "well", I did overlook air shocks, but that's because air shocks basically work like airbag suspensions. They're different from the shocks we're discussing here, but I suspect you know that and are just trying to stir the pot.
Air shocks aren't really designed to raise ride height, but rather increase payload capacity so you ride more level with a full load. I know some will beg to differ, but I don't think they were ever marketed strickly to raise ride height. I know back in high school we used to put them on our old Camaros to jack up the rear(back when that was cool), but the ride would knock your fillings out! They tend to give a bouncy ride due to the lack of valving.
They make add on airbags that bolt to the leaf springs or fit inside coil springs to help increase stability when loaded down. I thought about getting them for the rear of my QC since the thing squats pretty hard with very little weight in the bed. I would put them in the front if it had coil springs to help reduce nose squat with my plow on, but no go with torsion bars. I think bags are better because you still get the benefit your shock absorbers PLUS the added benefit of the bags when loaded down. If you don't need the bags you just deflate them, keeping your normal ride.

Message: When I installed the Gabriel shocks, the rear of my truck did indeed sit about 1/2" higher...we checked the height difference with one Gabriel and one stocker installed. Of course, that was when they were brand new... I'm sure after they wore in, it's back to the same height. The Gabriels are a lot stiffer than my stockers were.
...and I get a lot less wheelhop. I'd love to get some really good shocks in the future...too poor right now though. lol

Message: I believe that the Monroe Reflex shocks have many of the IAS features, but at much lower price. I seriously considered them when I was looking at the IAS', but decided I didn't want to risk not liking them and then having to buy the IAS too.
Since then I have read a few posts that used the Monroe's and were happy with them.
