I am considering buying or leasing a Dakota and wondering if there are any other girls out there with one. I have a 4 year old son and he loves trucks, too. I really like them but gosh am I weird? I drove a Ram today too and loved that as well. How practical of a "Mom" mobile is it? Lookin for some comraderie out there girls.....

I am sure its better than having a mini van and having that soccer mom label. I am a guy but a QC has come in handy having a 15 month old son. my wife likes it but is still intimidated on parking it. she hasnt drove anything that large before.

Kristy,
make sure you speak to the dealer about the saftey features. my 2001 dakota regular cab has a switch to disable the airbag on the passenger side incase i have a small child or infant in a child seat. your probably best going with a club or quad cab especially if you plan on more kids and their friends riding with you.
Also, chics that drive trucks are hot, especially when they take their trucks camping and fishing.
Good luck and do your research before you buy. you might even want to consider leasing for a year with option to buy and see if it suits you.

Do you plan on having any other kids with you? particularly in car seats? I can't fit one in my '95 Club cab - the seat is not wide enough. Definately check out the safety features. My '95 does not have a passenger side air bag.

Chicks in trucks are hot! I even let my wife drive mine sometimes ;)

dan is right about the club cabs.
i would go to you local police station and see what info they have on particular vehicles and child restraining seats. in NJ they will check your vehicle and your seat for functionality and show you how to properly secure.

Mike M has a good idea. The police departments in every city/state I have lived in offered this as a service. There is an absurdly high percentage of people who do not know how to properly install a child seat.

I think a Quad Cab is more suited for a family with young kids than an extended cab or regular cab. I love my extended cab and while bigger than competitor extended cabs, not very practical as a "long term" vehicle for a family with kids.

I've got 8 and 6 year old boys.
I've had a quadcab Dakota since 2001.(since the boys were 4 and 2)
Both they and I love it.
There's just something about trucks that vans and suvs can't touch.
Mine is a 4x4 and a bit high for the little guy but he doesn't care.
I'd go quadcab if I were you , if only for the future leg room you'll need.
It has 6 seatbelts so those 7 passenger minivans are not that much more capable.
I had a Nissan Quest for 6 years and only had 6 or more people in it twice for 20 mile trips each time.
You're only negatives will be grocery getting....parking a bigger vehicle. (bigger than a car anyway), keeping the groceries from sliding around in the back (carry a row of milk crates in back) and gas mileage ( these are not Corolla's or Civics)

That said I still say go for it.
You'll be the "coolest mom" in the neighbourhood.

I've been doing the stay-at-home dad thing for a little while, and haul 3 kids (1, 5, and 8) in my 03 4*4 Quad Cab. Some thoughts:
- You realistically can't fit more than 2 carseats in the back. I have a rear facing car seat on one side, a booster on the other, and then squeeze the oldest kid in the middle when necessary. Three in the back seat is cozy. Trying to fit three car seats will run into problems trying to reach the seat belt latches in between them.
- If you have a 4*4 that is slightly raised (meaning stock before the 05 model), you'll probably want to add running boards or side nerf bars--these serve as a step and helps the kids climb in and out.
- To address Hammerbak's concern about sliding and spilling groceries, buy a large Rubbermaid 48 gallon (I think the largest size they make) HEAVY DUTY tote. They cost something like $70. I forget what Rubbermaid calls this particular line of totes, but it's the one with the black tub, hinged grey lid, and large red latch. These fit perfectly in the back of the truck (and even under a tonneau cover if you have one), and can hold more than a shopping cart load of stuff. You just drop the tailgate, slide the tote back to the edge, load it up, slide it back into the bed, and close the gate. This not only keeps the contents dry, but also contained in one spot and out of sight. Also, a spray-in bed liner is very useful to keep things from sliding in the back (there are countless threads in this forum on people's opinions on Line-X versus Rhino-Liner, which I won't rehash here.)

another quad cab here.
my wife loves it and we have a 1 yr old.
we just got him a forward facing seat.
its kinda big so depending on the kiddie seat and how many you plan on having it gets real cramped for an adult.
you might want to get a ram for more room, but if you're like me a ram, especially a quad cab, is too expensive.
but for us with one son its perfect.
the only thing is, is my wife isnt used to driving such a long vehicle so rubbing the tires is common for her

go for the quad cab!

Well, I went away for the day...and voila - you all had some great information for me.... Things I never thought about like the grocery bin in the back... That's a good point about the room and the quad cab. I definately would go with the quad cab even though I don't plan on any more little ones.

What is that spray liner - is it like rubber type stuff? I'll do a little research.

Hey, thanks for the compliments.....I will definately put on my lipstick and have a great time!

I dunno much bout spray-in liners...but if it's gonna have a tonneau cover over it, just get a rubber bed mat for it. Voila! No more sliding.

I keep a tote in the bed of my truck. it works great for things that I do not want to put in the ext cab. Who cares of it slides a little, stuff inside does not spill / break, etc. Oh yeah, I have a tonneau cover too.

You can also get a cheap extendable shower curtain rod and lock it in place to keep stuff from sliding. Usually cheaper than the cargo things they sell.

well, i know qaudcabs have pretty short beds but if you don't plan on hauling anything large back there, you could get a toolbox. my stock bedliner is the worst about sliding things, so i've got a nice stainless steel diamond toolbox mounted back there now, and even with enough tools for any kind of roadside problem, i can still fit plenty of groceries in it when my gf goes crazy shopping. just a suggestion and it works good for rainy days. i've got a reg cab so i still got plenty of bed left. good luck with it though.

I defy you to take a grocery bag , put 2 cans of soup, a bottle of pop, a bag of milk and a head of lettuce in it ,then put it in the bed of your truck.
(Don't cheat and tie the bag shut because nobody does that with a weeks worth of groceries.)
Now drive about 6 miles through town as senior- citizen-like as you would like, and still have everything just where you left it when you started.

Go ahead ...I dare you!
