Subject: super tech oil from wal-mart IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone here know anything about this oil? I was in a wal-mart store here looking around for some things and decided to see what oil they carried. I saw their super tech synthetic is under $3 a quart.
Has anyone used it before? I found online that their super tech gear oil is manufacturered by pensoil and thought that they may also make the oil.
I know wal-mart is not a oil company and must rebrand someone elses.

Walmart SuperTech Oil is a Group III hydrocracked base oil, ... NOT a PAO based 100% True Synthetic Oil --- Group IV/V.
Who makes it? There were actually two answers:
In the U.S. -- last time I asked it was Quaker State ...
... (actually a subsidiary of the "old" Quaker State Company)
In Canada it was made by PetroCanada using
Chevron's hydrocracking technology.
Walmart Supertech, blended and packaged by Quaker State, is a Group III based oil, NOT a 100% TRUE Synthetic PAO. I believe the national price is running at approximately $10-$15 for a 5 quart jug. Remember, ... judge an oil by what is does (how it protects) and NOT what it costs.

Oil Filter Manufacturers
Honeywell - makes Fram (In Canada the Quaker State filters are Fram filters / In the USA, QS is Purolator), Pennzoil, Quaker State
Arvin Meritor - makes Purolator Premium Plus, PureONE, Ford OEM, V-1 & SureFlow (Superflow?)
Dana - makes Wix and Napa Gold/Silver, AC Delco DuraGuards for Canada
Baldwin (Parent of Hastings) - Baldwin, Hastings, Amsoil, Casite, maybe others
Champion Labs - Mobil 1, K&N, SuperTech, AC Delco DuraGuards (two different types) for USA, Bosch Premium, STP, Ultraguard Gold, Deutch & Luberfiner
Cummins Engine - owns Fleetguard

*** Walmart SuperTech Oil Filter *** - Manufactured by Bosch / Champion Labs. While Super Tech is a pretty decent filter, it isn't up to the same level as the Bosch Premium, even if it is made in the same place. The Bosch premium has a higher quality media, and filters out smaller particles ... straight from the people at Champion that the SuperTech is a 20 micron filter and the Bosch is a 15 micron filter. There are two considerations when choosing a filter, FLOW & FILTRATION, and SuperTech is not at the top in either category.

Message: I use it because it's ALL YOU NEED if you use your truck as a daily driver. If you're not racing or putting in serious abuse, then this oil meets the service standard requirements (SJ-whatever) and is all you need.
Best of all, and oil and filter change for $6.20 simply can't be beat. That's my main reason for using it!
On the other hand, I would never use it in my Corvette, so if you're Dak is souped up and you beat on it alot, then I wouldn't be using this oil in it!

The key word you used is "standard" (or "minimal" protection).
It has been proven by car and truck manufacturers that synthetic oil and lubes are superior. They are all switching to synthetic factory fill in the motor, rear, tranny, etc. Why question that? Why use dino or a fake synthetic like el-cheapo WallyWorldSuperTech?
Even the factory I work for switched all vehicles and machinery to synthetics. You get better performance and longer life using synthetics.
Some people think short term and others long term.
Not using synthetics is like not having health insurance or life insurance.

You paid lots of $$$$$ for your Dakota, your new pride and joy. You paid tens of thousands of $$$ for something you hope will always perform "like new". Why would you want to use cheap oil?
Most oils on the market today are manufactured to a minimum specification.
Use a premium synthetic oil in your pride and joy!
Use the cheap crap in a junker!
Would you want to use a premium synthetic oil in an old junker? No! Then why would you want to use minimum spec oil in your pride and joy?

Message: Mr. Lark,
This is where you are wrong, it IS my junker! I spent $6,800 on it, has 93,000 miles, and is 8 years old. Sure it's in "nice" shape, but I have a hard time justifying $50 oil changes on a vehicle like this when $6.20 does the job.
My point is this, for all of you with new Daks, or ones in nice condition with modified motors, or for those of you who really really love your truck, then no doubt about it, go for the synthetic. But I don't feel that is the right choice for everyone. In my case, I feel that with regular 3,000 miles oil changes with dyno oil will fully satifsy my expectations from an older high-mileage vehicle.

Message: Your last post makes some excellent points. I have never used super synthetics or megahypermicron oil filters and my vehicles always last a long time. My Chev pickup has 390k miles on it.
It's called taking care of things and not abusing them.
I think that many 16 year old ricer types believe that expensive oil and filters are a magical shield against beating the shlt out of their cars.

and it is a synthetic.

Message: There are only so many vendors who make filters and oil. Same as gas. Why pay the $10 cost of a K&N filter that is 15 microns when you can pay $6 for a pureolator filter that is also 15 microns? You are paying for the name (and they might be made by the same vendors!).
Of course this is just an example since I don't know the specs on the above mentioned filters.
The supertech oil filters might not be as good as a k&n/pureolator (15 microns) but are still a good filter at 20 (same as several other vendors filters who you probably use). As Jacob so plainly explained, why spend the money for the brand name when the cheaper stuff works (and besides, it's all made by same vendors).
I think it would be interesting to see what the filter levels are between the big boys and the "cheap stuff" as well as the vendors.
As Mr. Amsoil alluded to, we need to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. 15 micro vs 15 micron & 20 micron vs 20 micro & true synthetic oil vs true synthetic, etc.
I think people put to much into the whole "synthetic is the ONLY way to go" when it's not as evident by the 148k on my dakota and the 390k on the chevy mentioned by "yes" above. My dad owned a 72 chevy cheyenne and 86 s-10 whose engine outlasted the body, both were retired at over 220k miles and never hauled synthetics let alone used it.

Message:
In theory, reducing wear particles to "0" is optimum but in the real world of automobile engines it doesn't work.
Filtration vs. Flow
What good does filtering out for instance .5 (1/2) microns ... 100% of the time ... but causing wear by interupting oil flow to the bearings.
__________________________________________________
YOU NEED A BALANCE BETWEEN FILTRATION AND FLOW
FILTRATION
It seems that engine wear gets worse when there are particles above 5 micron particles not being filtered out of the system.
CLEARANCES IS THE KEY ISSUE
It really depends on the clearances in your engine. An engine such as my neighbors LT1, which is a small block Chevy as far as the bottom end is concerned, has large clearances so a 20 micron particle won't harm it as much as it would on a much tighter engine such as many DOHC 4 cylinder imports. So in other words, it's different in every case.
The same holds true for older engines with large clearances.
--------------------------------------------------
FLOW
FLOW IS AS IMPORTANT, maybe MORE IMPORTANT ... than FILTRATION.
Many filters have good filtration and terrible flow.
