William, I have a optima red top battery, i think the red and yellow top are the same sizes. It is smaller than the oem battery, so it fit on the tray. I used the original tie down piece on the optima and it secures it great, no movement. It just looks very little in the oem compartment.

A week ago I went to the best auto elec shop around here > It's owned by a life long friend > Went there to but a deep cycle optima > He told me he just got back from there factory and BIG SURPRISE >> All the optima batteries come off the same assembly line > Only the colors and the prices are differant > The guy showing him the business said they had some problems a while back causing them to replace tons a batteries so they went all the way with the deep cycle in all cases > he told me to save my money and go with a group 27 interstate and also to go with the second best one ,. Only 5 minutes differance in the reserve capasity and he thinks a better battery plus saving some bucks to boot > Known this guy all my life and he is very honest > I'm sure in my mind he got it all correct >

The optima is a good battery with some unusual charectoristics. It can be mounted in various positions, it's absolutly leak proof, and extremly resistant to vibrations and trauma.

If those qualifications are important to you, then it's probably worth the extra bux. But if you're an average truck driver - like me - you really don't need that kind of capacity, so you're paying for capabilities you'll never need or use.

I put one in my Cobra kit, because it sits directly over the passenger foot box and the computer. The leak proof case and traum resistance is important in this application.

In extremly hot or cold climates, it will probably last about 1/3 longer than standard battery. But at twice the cost, it's not a very good selling point.

OTOH, if having this battery in your truck helps you to sleep at night, then by all means go for it.

Another good reason to get it is if you plan to put a winch on your truck. It helps keep up a bit.

looks like it didnt; get my last post,

I use a ham radio a lot and leaving it is hard on the stock batteries...so I was hoping to get better life out of the optima I wish there was room for a second battery under the hood but no luck, and I don;t have a box for the back to put a set back there and an isolator.

Anyone done this before a second battery and isolator in the back or somewhere underneth???

Will
