Subject: 93 dakota sometimes starts, sometimes not

I have a 93 Dakota with a 3.9L throttle body injection. It only starts when it wants. I first gave it a shot of ether (cold day)and nothing, so i figured no spark, it was a bit weak, so I have replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and battery. It started fine for a week and then it wouldnt again. I got it going the other day and let it idle for an hour and shut it off for a half hour, I tried to start it again and it wouldnt start, the next morning(10 degrees out) it started right up. Next day, the same thing. A friend with a code scanner came up with EGR solenoid circuit, throttle body temperature sensor circuit, and MAP sensor electrical circuit. I dont want to just start replacing sensors either. I think i can hear the fuel pump coming on. Has anyone heard of these symptoms before? I appreciate any suggestions.

If you have a 93, it is not TBI, it is fuel injected. Last year for TBI was 91 I think, maybe 90 for the 3.9.

OK, Keeping in mind that I have installed a naw battery...this morning i went out and tried to start the truck and it would just crank. My brother came over and hooked up the jumper cables and it started up. I drove around town and it ran perfect as if nothing was wrong. I shut it off and it wont start again, it kind of fires a bit..but I wouldnt even say it starts and dies out, it just sounds like its going to but doesnt. I replaced the fuel filter today which was pretty bad but nothing changed. OH yeah, my brother tried to jump it again but now it wont start at all. Ether wont do the trick either, and its getting spark! IM going crazy here....please help guys...

Just passing along some info. that I came across awhile ago.

Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, fuel pump, and coil. All four wires are red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice.

What often happens is that water gets into the fusebox, drains down the harness, and eventually corrodes the splice into green powder (oxidized copper). You cannot tell if it is bad by looking at it, you will have to cut the tape off of the splice and inspect the connection. If you see any green or white residue on the connection under the tape, it has started to go bad and needs to be re-done (preferably by soldering).

This problem can be very intermittent, sometimes just a single miss while cruising down the highway, sometimes just a long cranking time. Others found that it was even sensitive to temperature (28-40F) and high humidity.

This is a big problem on 92-95 Daks. Chances are if you ever drove in the rain, yours has already started corroding so it is one area to check if there are no stored DTCs.
