Subject: overhead console question IP: Logged
Message: I have a question regarding the overhead console in my 2002 4x4 QC. When it’s in the compass / temp mode, if I hold the reset button for a few seconds a display appears that has a number with the letters VAR under it. I noticed this number changes from 1-15 if I push the step button. My question is, what is this “VAR” setting for. I looked in my owner’s manual and didn’t see anything on this.

Message: I have to admit I don't know for sure, but I would bet you that it's for Magnetic variation to correct the difference between pointing to Magnetic North instead of True North. Although that would be weird for it to only reach 15 as here in Oregon we're about 21 degrees variation.

Message: They're not degrees, they're zones, for the correction. It should be correct when you pick it up. By doing the cirles it automatically sets it.
At least in the owners manual of my 2001, it says it does.

Message: It sets magnetic variance (VAR) for your particular location on the Earth, so the electronic compass can accurately tell you which way you're headed. Your owner's Manual should explain it for you.
I also remember reading somewhere that while in the compass mode, there is a button (or two) on the EVIC that you can depress for about 10-15 seconds, and the compass will then display your heading in degrees, rather than compass points. I tried it some time ago, and it works, but it's been so long, and I couldn't find it in my reference material.
Anybody know this one?

Message: Nevermind. Here it is. From excellent information source:
http://www.wjjeeps.com/evic.htm
"While in the compass/temperature display, press and hold the C/T button for 10-15 seconds. The compass will switch to the "Compass Engineering Mode". This will display the raw angle at which you are travelling, in degrees. This mode would not be of great use on the freeway (the undamped readout makes wild swings when passing trucks, bridges, etc.) but it might be of some use off-road when trying to correlate your location to a position on a topo map."
