I have a dvd player in my Dak, with a 7.2 inch LCD. I have cameras and a video game also. I have it for shows only, I never use it when driving.

Check this link out for equipment, they have stuff for every budget.

I'm thinking about getting a portable one that has a screen seperate from the dvd player, and making a fiberglass enclosure and then possibly hard wiring it. a lot cheaper then the screens i have seen for sale, plus it would be a custom one of a kind

Hey deaver, if you are in Canada go to your local Canadian Tire store. They have DVD players that have and adapter with it that so you can put it on the back of head rest. I bought one for our van for the kids, but I think the adapter could also attach to the cup holder in my Dakota,(which is in the dash) I have not tried it but I think it will work. This DVD player has it own speakers, head phone jacks, will play through your fm radio, comes with a remote and has a AC adapter. Its a good all purpose unit for $300.00 Hope this helps.

One word.
COMPUTER.

It's the sh*t and you can always add other devices as you go.

Check out my mp3-DVD or whatever thread.

Using a mini ATX approx 2Ghz motherboard (it's pretty small but not as small as a mini-itx) and if you have cheap computer stores like we have (Fry's Electronics) you can build for cheaper than buying a good DVD player.

plus hold every single mp3 yo uown on the hard Drive with endless screen animations, whatever. I'm going to rip my popular DVD's down onto some of my hard drive space to save time when traveling. (use DVD Shrink).

http://www.ex-audio.com/shop/index.php
Check him out for screens, touch screens, or even full DVD systems. Straight form Honk Kong so it's about 60% the price you will pay form any of the other rip offs I see.
I got a 7" Touchscreen monitor for just under $300 shipped! Lately he had the 8" for that price but the 7" barely fits in the dash at an angle as it is.

he has 7" or so non touch screen monitors for just over $100 that I'd like to get for my back seats.

No shows. just two kids and 3+ hour trips to the dunes or anywhere else we adventure off to. :-)

maybe I'll go take a video of my sh*t and post it so people can understand what I'm talking about. I'll never use a standard head unit based stereo system again. Well, except in our grand Caravan. It came with a 6 disk DVD and the wife would remove my ballz if i did sh*t to that like I do my Dak!

ok. I attemted to make a video of the basic operations. I had to sit the digital video camera on the center console so it didn't take a straight on image of the LCS monitor so you know how well that works. the video doesn't clearly show the mp3 visualizations correctly. But good enough. The bass, even with the volume very low, distorts the camera audio input slightly. It seems to turn it's input level up automatically no matter how low I turn the stereo volume.

Anyway. Here's three short videos I made real quick.

mp3 player (win-amp)demo
When you see the mp3 demo I open a folder. As I scroll through those folders, each one is a artist. Under each folder is whatever albums I have from them. There must be between 100 and 200 artists on the system!
You COULD store DVD rips the same way onto the hard drive to have instant access to your favorite movies.

Short demo of DVD part
Just a short clip of the DVD player. the touch screen is a 16 : 1 widescreen. But hard to tell here.
BTW, this is a direct DVD copy I made.

GPS-navigation demo
I just open the program long enough to bring up my sisters house on a street map then zoom out. No way to show the GPS without driving. I rarely use the GPS.

Anyone wanting to build one I can give some heads up if you want. It's easier to build than it looks.

If you build one look around for prices.
I'm glad i looked around before i bought form the first place or so with them touch screens for sale.

Most places were $450 to $499 for the exact one I got for just under $300 shipped!
I think I left a link for that place on my websote.

The PC (Motherboard,CPU,memory, Hard Drive) was $200 from Fry's. Added a few things like wirelss remote and the WiFi card.
I still need a few more things to fix it up. Still running it off of a small inverter because the car to PC power supply was too small. It fried :-( I tried to be too cheap and bought one too small.

Oh. I recently stopped using the Windows media Player and tried the latest WINAMP player. It's been a while since I tried that one. And it has some better features than WMP for the car use.
One awesome thing is if I shut down the PC and start it up next time, the same playlist from before is already to go! Plays from where I left off and that kicks a$$ right there.
