Subject: Frozen CV shafts on 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: OK, I have a Y2Kota 4.7 4x4 that has developed some oil pressure quirks at 75K miles, and I want to pull the oil pan to have a look at the pickup screen. To do that, the front axle has to be dropped.
Got the front driveshaft out now, bearing carriers, etc., right up to the point that I need to pop off the half shafts to free up the axle for removal.
Started with the right, but what happened was that the *entire axle* appears to be coming out with the half-shaft. Dropped the differential to confirm; sure enough, the right axle spline isn't visible in the carrier like the left one is. And now I have an extra inch of protruding axle that won't go anywhere.
Swell. The left one doesn't want to budge either, and now I have a real problem; I don't think I can get this axle out without disassembling the front suspension to clear the shafts from the steering knuckles.
I *really* don't want to do this, but I can't see that I have any choice. The only other thing I can think of to do is to maybe disassemble the half-shafts in place, but I can't imagine there's room for that.
If I'd had to replace a CV boot, I'd have this same problem right now.
Anyone else been down this road? What am I cursed with?

Message: Save yourself the headache and replace the oil pressure sensor/sending unit. Never seen any oil pump problems on the 47,59 or 52. Don't drop the pan.

Message: Heres my opinion.
Recently I had a cracked front differential in my 01. I too had the same problem getting my half shafts out of the diff. Im not sure if your having the same problem as me but maybe.
I tried every known method to get my half shaft or cv axle seperated from the diff but just could do it. I did in fact manage to get the diff and both shafts down all in one piece though. Just remove the bolt holding the diff in. Then you can slide it over in one direction allowing enough room for the cv axle to get clear of the lower control arm. Then slide the whole diff in the other direction to get the other cv axle clear. After that you should have two axles and a diff sitting on the ground. Worked for me.
Now you say that you just want to remove your oil pan. I would just do that and put back the diff with the axle still attached. I say this because getting my half shafts seperated from my diff was extremely difficult. What ended up happening was my stub shafts that come out of the differential broke free of the diff before the cv broke free of the stub shaft. After that I used a hydraulic press to with multiple tons of force to get the axle seperated from the stub.
Ultimately the retaining clip that is suppose to compress never did compress. It was unable to because of the rust and other debris that was lodged underneath it. (I guess from the years of offroading) Best of luck to you and I sure hope you dont have to try and seperate your cv axles fromt he front differential.
That is just my opinion

Message: To Jag: pressure is confirmed lower than normal. I'm suspecting a clogged pickup tube screen due to crud buildup in the pan, that's why I want a look. I think the pump itself is fine.
To Rize: Your description mirrors what I'm seeing precisely.
Knowing there's enough room to scoot the whole assembly around without disassembling the front suspension is a huge help. I suppose that if the axle is supported with a jack once it's loose, I can try a lot of stuff. Shocks are out now, and I was considering popping tie rods and upper ball joints loose to get some room. No, I haven't taken it in for the ball joint recall yet...
The kicker is: if I had to replace any one of the 4 CV boots, I'd be in the exact same mess, so maybe it's best to get it worked out now while it's apart and I can do without driving it for a week or so.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes...
