Subject: Gas tank vent froze shut? IP: Logged
Message: First off, it’s been very cold here in NW PA the past few weeks. I have a 2002 4x4 4.7 QC that I park outside (not garaged). I stopped for gas last Friday morning and when I went to pump gas into the tank and it would not go it (kept shutting off pump). I figured maybe it’s the pumps nozzle angle…tried every position…still kicked the pump off every time I squeezed it. What very little gas that did go it made a gurgling sound like it had an air lock or something.
I didn’t have time to mess around anymore so I tried it again after work at a different pump…same deal. I then looked at the gas cap and noticed it had small ice crystals in the little holes in the middle of the cap. I figured then that something like a gas tank vent was plugged with ice. I’m sure glad I didn’t run it down to empty at that time (had about ¼ tank left).
My wife keeps her car in our heated garage in the winter. But his time I parked my truck in the garage to thaw it out to see if that was the problem. Sure enough, after it sat in the garage over night when I went to try to put gas in it the next morning it went in with no problem at the exact same pump.
I’m thinking that condensation turned to ice and built up, blocking off the fill tube’s vent line maybe??? Would using an additive like "Heet" help to prevent this? Anyone else had a problem like this?

Message: Rampager,
Never did have a problem with the air vent freezing like that, but a couple bottles of drygas should be able to remove any moisture in the tank.
Also, keeping the tank full helps the tank stay "dryer" because there is no room for moist air. When it gets cold out, moist air in the tank condenses into the gasoline and water builds up over time.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I thought this was odd too, I'd never heard of such a thing. I talked to a service tech at a mopar dealer and he too had never heard of this happening (due to iceing).
I've heard that there are some types of drygas that is safe to use and others to avoid, but I can't recall what type to stay away from. I was wondering if anyone here has any insight on this subject.
I haven't used it yet, but I bought some drygas called "Iso-Heet" that says it's premium water remover and fuel system antifreeze. It says on the bottle it contains isopropyl alcohol. Is this safe to use in an 02 Dak?

Message: the fuel pump auto shutoff is controlled by the pump nozzle, specifically the tiny hole in the nozzle about 3/16" from the end of the nozzle. Anything else ANYONE tells you is pure BS.

Message: Yep, that "Iso-Heat" stuff should be okay... I've used all different kinds of drygas and haven't had any problems...
the only other thing it could be if the drygas doesn't work is maybe there is water getting in up near the gas cap somehow and freezing that way.

Message: ACTUALLY, it's a good thing you didn' use your real name because it'd suck to look like such an ass.. You said:
"the fuel pump auto shutoff is controlled by the pump nozzle, specifically the tiny hole in the nozzle about 3/16" from the end of the nozzle. Anything else ANYONE tells you is pure BS."
No one is questioning that, but when there is no air getting into the tank the fuel won't go down the neck, causing it to back up almost instantly to the 3/16" hole you are referencing. Anything else ACTUALLY tells you is pure BS.
