Subject: rust inside gas cap
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 4w/d club cab,6 cyl, 5 spd. I've already had 2 gas caps replaced. Both had rust around the small holes in the middle of the cap on the inside. The first thing they ask is what kind of gas am I using & all are surprised when I say Shell. They tell me it looks like I use some cheap crappy stuff. However,a friend of mine just went through the same thing & sure enough all he uses is Shell gas too.(from different stations) He's got a 2002 6 cyl,5 spd, club cab(no 4 w/d)
I'm looking to find out if it's the gas or a defect in the caps?!
Anyone else had this problem? Thanks !

Try Chevron gas for a while and see if the problem re-appears. If not, it was the Shell gas.

Could be the area or position that you are parking in. When the tank goes through an extreme change in temperature the air that was drawn-in during previous fuel consumption looses its moisture during condensation inside the tank. When the air vents it can loose its moisture on the cap if the cap is cooler than the air leaving the tank. Sometimes parking in a garage or on the west side of a house has an affect when the sun comes around and hits the vehicle. Put a can of dry gas in every couple or third tanks to help get rid of the moisture that may be collected in the tank to help a little with the problem. You may figure that 20 cans will cost more than a cap,but the moisture of course can damage much more than a cap. It can cause rust in the system and clog an injector etc.

Had the same problem on my 2000 4.7 4X4.
I use SUNOCO most of the time.

Maybe if they made the gas cap totally out of plastic it would solve the problem.

What about putting some additive in the tank to remove water such as heet?
