Subject: Extended Warranty- Thoughts IP: Logged
Message: My Dakota is about to reach 36,000 miles and I'm questioning purchasing the manufactures extended warranty.
Model: '02 QC 4x4 4.7
Cost: $1459 (I think this also depends on where you live)
Coverage - to 75,000 and/or an additional 3 years, whichever comes first
So far I've had no major issues with the truck, just the two recalls and bad luck driving over sharp objects that like to punchure my tires (3 different times already). Anyway, with all the bad things I hear about these transmissions I have to think that if I do ever need to replace it, the cost of this warrenty would damn near offset it's cost alone.
So who's got it, who doesn't ... who wishes they would have purchased it and who thinks it's a waste of money?
I have about 6-8 weeks to figure it out before I reach 36,000 miles.
I'd appreciate anyone's input who's went down this path.

Message: The transmission concern is not enough to get me to buy an extended warranty of any kind. The only reason I would buy one is if I was concerned about affordability of repairs in general. If you can afford to take that same $1500 and put it into savings and leave it there, then there is a great chance that there will be $1500 in savings that you may not need to spend for a long time. If you buy the warranty, do it because you are highly concerned about repair expenses coming out of your regular budget. AND, don't buy a partial coverage warranty and expect it to cover everything. Chrysler Max Care is the only coverage level that even comes close to full coverage. Chrysler Added Care covers lots of expensive repairs, but nothing like Max Care.

Message: I think that Jason has a few good points. It is up to the individual situation. One thing though is that an '02 should have the 7/75 or 7/100 on the drive-train -mine does- and though there is some restrictions once off the initial warranty it is a good deal better than no warranty at all. That should greatly reduce the overall cost of extended too. When I purchased mine the normal cost for extended was $1495, but because of the 7/100 from the factory it only cost me $795. I happen to think it is worth it -personally for my situation- and it has come in handy to pay for the rental car, hotel, food and repairs when I broke-down while out of state. A locked caliper on the highway could cost you about $1200 or more because of the subsequent failures. I don't know that the cost you state would be worth it, but as I said, it should cost less than that with the factory drive-train warranty in place. When my caliper locked out of state, it would have cost me two calipers, hoses, rotors, pads, master cylinder, hotel for two nights, rental car and I may have waited longer if I were just a regular customer.
The dealer also put new spindle bearings and seals and packed them because the heat started to melt the grease. They also noticed that one of the o-rings on my air conditioner were leaking while it was there and replaced it then charged the system. My cost was $0. Some have a $100 or $50 deductible.
Iguess itis just like insurance. If you can afford to self-insure then that is great, but my situation would have cost me $1836 if I had to pay outof pocket for those repairs.

Message: There are multiple reasons that extended warranties are pushed by salespeople. One is definately to pad their own pocket. Others include, not having to hear a vehicle owner whine when their vehicle is 2000 miles out of warranty and they have a problem...giving the buyer the additional choices makes many buyers happy...making the boss happy...lots of buyers want the added warranty.

Message: I have an early 2002 (4.7 V8 SLT, auto 4 x 4 club cab) with 70,000 miles on it. Mine had the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. Since having it, I had a brake caliper failure 2,000 mile out of warranty--toasted everything. The Dodge Dealer contacted Chrysler and they helped me out (I had to pay for brake pads and rotors) they ate the other $600 worth of stuff. Also had a problem with the heater control--could only blow air out the defroster duct, that was another $250. Like everyone else, I also did the ball joints under the recall. This is my third Dakota (95, 98 & 2002), I have never taken the extended warranties. Haven't taken it with my other seven Chrysler and Jeep products and have never got caught with any big engine/transmission problems. The way I figure it, I am way ahead and will still be if I have a big repair ($1,000 to $1,500 x 10 vehicles). I buy the vehicles in good faith and have been lucky. I service them well (usually trade them between 80,000 and 90,000 miles) and have been really happy with the two Dodge Dealers that I deal with in Connecticut. I am sure that I will be back in the Dodge showroom next time too. This 2002 truck has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I drive it off-road on the beaches of Cape Cod, Tow a 4,000 lb. boat and love the way it drives on the highway. Best part, is it still fits in the garage and is easy to park. Good luck. Fishful Thinking

Message: I agree they are not worth buying at the time the vehicle is purchased. At the time I bought my truck they wanted around $2,000. They charge extra for the period the company is already covering. If you wait a few years you get a better deal. I bought one at the date my 3 years was up (28,000 miles). Type in Chrysler extended warranty in your web search. There was a dealer in the midwest that offered the Chrysler warranty at a 25% discount. I was a bit leary at first, but it came in around $1,000 written by Daimler Chrysler. I don't recall if that was a $50 or $100 deductible cost to cover just drivetrain and electrical. I may never need it but I plan to keep my truck well beyond the extended warranty period. I have had computer problems on a vehicle before (Mazda)and know it can get real expensive in a hurry. Also picked one up on the used PT Cruiser my wife bought about a year ago.

Message: Here is what i think is the most important thing to remember with extended warranties. The dealers can charge WHATEVER they want for them. You can be rest assured if they want to charge you $1459, there cost was about $800. Remember that when 'dealing" on the price. I've seen the price sheets the dealers get for the warranties, I am not making this up. Good luck
2002 QC 4x4 Sport Plus, 4.7L, auto, Patriot Blue, Tire & Handling group, Heavy Duty Service group, Leer cap w/out windows, Mopar Step bars and roof rack, Rhino liner in bed and on step bars, Pace Edwards Power Tailgate lock 3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

Most dealerships are not like that. Find another dealership.

The Calliri Group is the dealer that helped me when I broke-down in Conneticut during a trip to Florida. I detailed the experience in a couple previous posts. They were excellent in the service department, and I wrote a letter accordingly to Chrysler.

Message: Read the Warranty before you buy it, here are a few tips to look at
-Deductible... $1500 with a $200 deductible per incident = useless warranty.
-Does the warranty require you to take the vehicle back to the dealer you bought it from, many of these warranties do... and you may not like their service department!
-Beware of phrases like "If a non covered parts causes the failure of a covered part, we will not replace ANY of the parts under warranty" or something like that.
-Make sure if contains something like "If a covered part causes the failure of a non-covered part, ALL parts will be covered"
MOST of these warranties and a hoax and are just a way of ...stealing... from consumers (who really wants to read all the fine print sitting in a POS chair at a dealership when buying a new car.)

Message: I've never been a fan of extended warantee's but I did splurge this last time.
The only reason I went with it was because I bought a ford (my first) I drive a ford f450 at work so I know their history. That truck has been in the shop a few times for nothing major, but expensive. I would venture to say about $2k worth of repairs in the past 30k miles.
I paid $1,100 for it, it covers me 100%. I pay -0- dollar deductable, it covers cause and effect (meaning is the serpintine belt snaps and gets lodged in the alternator and does something to the alternator, they replace both free of charge)..I can take my vehicle to any ford dealership.
I also went with it because I got $3k more then my dakota was worth ($1,000 more then I owed) and I got the ford for $5,000 less then their asking price. Basically I got it for less then they were selling the 02 models for, only because it sat on their lot for over 60 days which I knew.
So basically the warantee was free to me.

Message: I have a '98 2wd, regular cab, short bed, 318, 5 spd. When I bought it new, I purchased the extended warranty with a $50 deductable. So far, I've had the belly pan gasket replaced, the rear rebuilt twice, all four control arms with ball joints and control arm bushings replaced, the steering rack with tie rod ends replaced, front and rear wheel bearings, the rear seal on the trasmission and probably a couple of things that I forgot about. All of these repairs were done after the standard warranty ran out. So, in my case, the warranty paid for itself several times over. My dealer never gave me any problem with these repairs. So the dealer you choose does make a difference when you decide to buy.
