Message: Anyone have experience correcting a P0171 engine code?
This is listed as a lean air/fuel mixture and has been indicated by an abnormally rich correction factor.
Poor gas mileage, bad smelling exhaust and black smoke out the tail pipe are some of the symptoms.

With the smell you are obviously not running lean. The correction factor is determined by the O2 sensor(s). I would replace some or better yet, all of them. Do it soon or you will wreck your CAT, if you haven’t already (cause it doesn’t take much)

Message: If that does not help, consider having the fuel pressure checked. The odor is possibly caused by an overcompensation for an actual lean condition. This lean condition could be the result of a fuel pump with low volume output.
