Subject: headlight problems IP: Logged
Message: I hve a 2000 QC 4x4, it kicks @$$!! but thats besides the problem. Everytime I go to tilt the steering wheel the headlights shut off. If I have the highbeams on, the tilting of the column wont shut it off, just the lowbeams. Obviously it's a wiring harness bound in the column issue, but I am not sure if its a simple fix or not? anyone else had this prob??? Thanks for any help

Message: Sounds like you're gonna need a harness, no doubt.
No matter how easy or hard the job may be
superdave, I would not wait too long to get it
fixed!
Ever see the end results of a electricial fire in
a car or truck. Most times they are totaled.
Good luck

Message: I have had the same problem as you and it is an easy fix. You have to remove the lever for the tilt wheel, the plastic panel under the steering column and the one on top. You will then find a plastic cover over the turn signal stalk. Remove the cover and you will find a bank of about 20 wires. You will notice that when you put the tilt wheel in the lowest postion that the purple wire comes loose from the connection. You need to pull the spade connector out and put it back on the purple wire and recrimp the connector.
I have tried to find my original post on this subject but can't seem to find it...Since doing this fix myself, I have not had any problems with the lights going out.

Message: Found the original message posted 7/5/04....
have had the same problem. you need to remove the the plastic that goes around the steering column...there are 3 screws that hold it on...takes a 7/64 long shank allen wrench. remove the lever for the tilt wheel...plastic covers will now come off. look behind the turn signal stalk towards the intrument panel and you will see a black cover that is about 2" tall and rounded in the back...remove this cover. after removing black cover you will see a white connector that has 2 rows of about 8( i didn't count for sure)wires on top and bottom. the wire that you will be looking for is a purple one. for some reason that wire seems a little on the short side and has a way of working loose when you tilt the wheel. make sure that the wire is crimped real tight on the spade clip and push it back in the connector. check lights to make sure this fixed the problem. replace all parts removed in the reverse order and you should be good to go. i had problems about a month ago with this and it happened again this past saturday...took about 5 mins to fix the second time around.

Message: 2000QC, I wonder if that same problem may be
causing all the turn lights coming on (including
those in the dash) when making a left or right
hand turn? This problem happends to me once in
a while and only in warmer weather.
And the stealership NEVER heard of that problem
before.. Funny, they said the same thing about
ball joints too!

Message: Superdave, glad to have been of some help. You are the second person that I have helped out. Sure saves taking it to a dealer to have it fixed. When mine started acting up, it was warm weather so I didn't freeze while fixing it.
Radioman, don't know about your problem...have never had it happen to me so can't help you there.
