Message: while my boyfriend was driving i asked what why there was an o/d button on the shifter, and i pressed it. he says this is disasterous, and that now the engine is revving too high all due to me stupidly pressing the button. is this really possible???

Message: Your boyfriend is an idiot.
While it's not necessarily GOOD to press that at higher speeds...it won't murder the truck. That button just turns off overdrive so instead of driving in O/D and saving gas, it downshifts and runs in 3rd gear (hence the higher RPMs). The button resets after you turn off the truck, but all you would have had to do was hit the button again and it would have gone right back into overdrive. Oh yeah... it's mainly there for towing purposes. When towing large loads or up/down hills where the transmission is constantly switching between 3rd gear and overdrive, you're supposed to turn overdrive off because the constant gear switching is hard on the transmission.

Message: Yeah...what he said. AND one more little known secret about that button (and obviously yours is malfunctioning), it is an idiot boyfriend EJECT button. When functioning properly, any idiot boyfriends are immediately ejected from the vehicle to where the nearest sidewalk bus stop is located. That's where they belong if they don't understand that button.
Have him read the owners manual and he will better understand this oh-so-technologically-advanced feature.

Message: Erin,
Another thought:
Why would you want to keep a boyfriend who treats you so disrespectfuly?? Dump the jack-a$$.
Don't waste your time with a jerk. Too many decent guys who won't put you down and make you feel like you're "stupid".

Message: he's a wonderful guy, he just likes to be right, and a friend of his who is a mechanic has apparently said that pressing that button at highway speed is really a bad thing.
trust me, when he does things like that to my stuff, i react the same.

Message: He's full of s*** - probably no one told him that. It would have the same effect as stomping on the gas to pass someone on the highway - uses more gas, revs higher, but not damaging to the engine. Get this guy off your case - sounds like a control freak.

Message: really the only time i use mine IS at highway/freeway speeds. i use it when merging onto the freeway, and when there is a grade and i don't want to drop my speed to 30 like the other people that dont have OD or just dont want to downshift.

Message: Erin,
Bob, Jeff, JasonB, GB2K, are spot-on: o/d is just another gear. Your boyfriend's buddie, the "mechanic", must not be familiar with automatic transmissions. Not someone I would be comfortable with for information or repairs on my vehicle.
And my suggestion above still stands; someone who has to be 'right all the time' can only "last" with someone who is wrong all the time. Live your life, though, as you will. I've learned that being wrong on occassion is healthy. Most beneficial is having the maturity and healthy ego in being able to sincerely admit being human.
OK. Enough of the old-man lecture!!
O/D on, O/D off. Engage. Disengage. Doesn't matter at any speed except for fuel economy!!!
