Subject: '98 Rear Brake Sticking

Hello,

My step-dad has a '98 Dakota 4x4 club cab with V6 and ABS. I don't know if it's 4 wheel or just rear ABS. We got about 16" of snow and several days of below 0 degrees Farenheit temps (even the high temps for the day), and since the snow and cold started, the passenger rear brake is stuck engaged. My guess was something froze up back there. We discovered it because the truck starts to shudder/vibrate starting around 30-40mph, the truck doesn't coast like it should, and when we got done test driving it about 4 miles we could smell the cooked brake at that wheel only (plus it was extremely hot compared to the other side!).

Is there something common on these that goes wrong, and what's the best way to get the drum off if the pads are stuck engaged? We're going to pick up a Hayne's or Chilton's manual, but we're also going to have to do this in below freezing tempsa and it would be nice to be armed with as much info as possible.

Thanks!

As an update in case anyone can help, we pulled both drums off tonight. The one that was sticking/extremely hot came off easier than the one that wasn't sticking. And, I didn't have to adjust the star wheels just to get the drum off. They came off by hand. On inspection, everything was in place, nothing was broken, the pads were about 50%, and the wheel cylinders were not leaking.

I loosened up the adjusters on both sides about 3-4 turns and put it all back together. Each side spun freely. We took it for a test drive and the first 5 miles were great, and after about 5 miles the problem came back. The truck started to shudder when stepping on the brakes, and the wheel would lock up. Not good considering was in the middle of snowing about 6" of accumulation today.

It's even affecting the shifting points. When the wheel's brake is sticking, the engine revs a lot higher before upshifting. When the brake isn't sticking it shifts fine. I'm thinking the ABS must be getting confused. But, the ABS light is not on, nor is the pedal getting stiff. It feels normal whether the brake is locking up or not.

Thanks for any help!
