Subject: ABS light and differential

I have a 2000 Dodge dakota 4x4I #1.. went and had my brakes completely redone about couple of months ago , no problem them about two weeks ago my brake light and ABS light comes on. Took it back to the brake shop. The said they could not figure out what was wrong but said they talked to a buddy who worked at a nearby Dodge dealer and he told him it could be that the sensor is not working.
The break shop said that when they pulled the sensor out ( said it is in the rear differential...is that true) they said they had to clean it off due to alot of shavings and debris on it , they replaced it with a new sensor and drove the truck and again the light comes on. When they got back the pulled that sensor out and again said there were shavings on it ...They suggested i drain the fluid from the differenmtial and clean it out real good , fill it back up and try again...They seem to think the problem is in my differential could that be the case.? And if so how does one go about draining the fluid from the differential and what the heck would there be shavings in there for?

"Shavings" may be evidence of excessive wear in the rear differential, but a small amount of debris will be normal. If you have not had the differential fluid changed within the last 30K miles or so, their advice is solid, but may not completely correct your condition. Whan you drain the fluid, you will get a better idea of the condition of the differential based on the "shavings" and/or debris content in the drained fluid. Remove the bolts from the cover on the rear differential to drain and clean it. Reseal it with RTV sealant and refill it with the fluid appropriate for your differential. Search this site if you need a more detailed description of the procedure. It's been posted a zillion times.
