Three Critical Concerns for Confident Cold Weather Travel

All vehicles need attention from time to time, but in the wintertime your Dodge Dakota needs extra care.

For confident winter starts, it is important to keep a watch on three critical areas:

1) the lubrication system,
2) the cooling system,
3) and the battery.

Let's take a quick look under the hood to see if you're ready for the worst of Old Man Winter.

1) Check Your Motor Oil

It is important to check your motor oil levels on a regular basis. Without lubrication, friction between moving parts leads to engine wear.

But it is also important to think about the type of motor oil you are using.

*** For severe cold, there is a significant performance difference between SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL and conventional (dino) motor oil.

Cold weather is tough on engines because of the limitations of traditional, conventional (dino) lubricants (non-synthetic).

In cold temperatures, Motor Oils and Greases become thicker, thus ...

-- slowing starting rpm
-- restricting oil flow to critical engine parts
-- increasing wear on bearings and rings
-- decreasing engine life, and,
-- increasing the burden on an already overtaxed starting system.

For really cold weather, ONLY Synthetic Motor Oils and Lubricants offer the kind of performance that allows cars and trucks to start with ease.

Many synthetic motor oils still flow or pump at temperatures up to sixty and seventy below zero (-60F to -70F) ... and synthetics have a broader service range than traditional petroleum.

The admonition to check your motor oil is intended as a reminder to not only watch fluid levels, but to consider whether your motor oil is fulfilling its lubricating function in severe weather. No sense in being stranded on an isolated road because your engine couldn't turn over.

2) Check Your Antifreeze

If you are in a hostile winter region ... you are aware that inadequate antifreeze in the engine's cooling system can result in serious damage to your vehicle. When water freezes it expands, putting high stress on the corridors where it travels. A cracked engine block is not unlikely in extreme cold. Water pump failure and blown hoses are also common side effects from frozen cooling systems.

There are a number of relatively inexpensive antifreeze testers available for measuring the effective working temperature of your antifreeze. If you don't own one of these gauges, be sure to have the radiator fluid checked at your local service station to make sure it is suitable for severe cold temperatures.

In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the hazards associated with traditional Ethylene Glycol antifreeze. EG-based antifreeze is not only considered an environmental hazard and deadly for pets when spilled on the ground, it is toxic for children. What is especially bad is that Ethylene Glycol-based antifreeze has a sweet taste that invites animals and children to ingest it.

An alternative to Ethylene Glycol antifreeze is the new Propylene Glycol which is generally regarded as safe even in the event of accidental ingestion. In addition, it has an unpleasant taste, making it unlikely that animals or children will drink any appreciable amount. Propylene Glycol provides excellent protection against freezing, boiling and corrosion. In addition, the new AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is compatible with all other antifreeze products and does not require a complete system flush before usage.

__________ __________

AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant

AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant is formulated to provide benefits far beyond those found in today's conventional antifreeze and coolant products. This revolutionary formulation provides maximum antifreeze and cooling protection in the most extreme temperatures and operating conditions. And unlike conventional ethylene glycol based products, which are highly toxic and even fatal, AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant is formulated with propylene glycol. It is biodegradable and requires no special disposal costs or procedures in most areas. Above all, its low toxicity presents no threat to children, pets or wildlife.

3) Check Your Battery

The ideal operating temperature of your car battery is 80 degrees F. As temperatures drop, so does the efficiency of the battery. In very cold weather, the battery's power output can be diminished to as little as ten percent.

What's more, as batteries age their strength is further reduced. When it is very cold and your older battery has lost a measure of its cranking capacity, you have a situation where it may not have the power to turn over the engine.

Cold winter starts are harsh. If the motor oil is not fluid, and the battery worn down, you may want to have your cellular phone handy in case you need to call for help.

4) Be Prepared

It never hurts to be prepared, as the Boy Scouts are fond of saying. Even when you follow these routine maintenance checks it is still wise to stock the usual survival supplies as standard procedure for your vehicle - shovel, bag of sand or grit, toolbox, jumper cables, fuel de-icer additive, large flashlight and road flares. Extra blankets, clothes, food, fluids and a first aid kit are a life insurance policy that you hope you won't ever need, but sometimes can't afford to be without.

Good snow tires, and a few seasons of experience driving on slippery roads also helps ... and knowing when not to attempt driving at all.

It is 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside (windchill is -10 F) so I have a message for everyone to protect your engine in the Winter with the proper weight (viscosity) motor oil, and remember to use synthetic.

Winter Weight Oil ... and Cold Crank Protection

I will repeat the following which I have posted before ... the first number, preceding the "w-" as in "5w-" ("w" is for Winter), is an oil’s viscosity grade, is an indication of low-temperature performance -- the lower the better.

THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER ... is the Cold Cranking Measurement, which predicts the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.

The lower winter viscosity grades will be more valuable in colder climates.

"10w-__" generally flows and pumps at -4 degrees Fahrenheit,

"5w-__" generally flows and pumps fine at -13 degrees Fahrenheit,

... and each grade below that buys you another nine degrees.

Winter Preparation = Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90
IP: Logged

Message:

adam,

FYI - Gear Lube Information:

High quality gear oils must lubricate, cool and protect geared systems. They must also carry damaging wear debris away from contact zones and muffle the sound of gear operation. Commonly used in differential gears and standard transmission applications in commercial and passenger vehicles, as well as a variety of industrial machinery, gear oils must offer extreme temperature (hot and cold) and pressure protection in order to prevent wear, pitting, spalling, scoring, scuffing and other types of damage that result in equipment failure and downtime. Protection against oxidation, thermal degradation, rust, copper corrosion and foaming is also important.

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Gear lube

Specifically engineered for high demand applications, including trailer towing, heavy hauling, 4X4 off road driving, commercial use, and racing. Superior lube "film strength" combined with extra additives protects gears and bearings from scoring and wear. Resists high heat and possesses excellent cold flow properties.

________ ________
-------------------------------------------------

It is quite easy to change your gear lube.

Helpful Differential Recommendations:

-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives.

-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.

Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.

Other Cold-Weather Suggestions:

It is "Frigid" this week in the northern part of the country ( 14F where I live with negative wind chill ), so I offer other cold-weather suggestions.

--- Add gasoline anti-freeze to the fuel tank and keep it at least half-full. The fluid will protect against fuel-line freeze-up in cold weather.

--- I might also recommend using AMSOIL's Gasoline Stabilizer for gasoline engines, and AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate (heavy-duty diesel engines), or AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Modifier (light duty diesel engines).

Keep the correct mixture of antifreeze and water in the car's cooling system. I suggest AMSOIL's Propylene Glycol Biodegradable Coolant/Anti-Freeze. It is NOT toxic or lethal to children, animals or fish when ingested, unlike the common yet toxic and lethal, ethylene glycol.

Using AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Motor Oil in your engine and AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid in your transmission will help solve extreme cold temperature starting problems.

Amsoil provides outstanding low temperature fluidity for fast, dependable winter starts and immediate start-up protection.

If you are in an extremely cold climate, you might consider the new AMS-Oiler™ Oil Pre-charger.

Last but not least ... Park in a Garage, if possible. If not in a garage, park with the rear of the car facing the wind, if possible, helping to protect the engine from the extreme effects of wind chill.

Tineka,

AMSOIL introduced the first synthetic motor oil with an API (American Petroleum Institute) Service Classification in 1972. Being a small company Amsoil could not compete for shelf space with the big oil companies, so the set up the company using Independent Amsoil Dealers (such as myself) across the country using the Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) system. Since that time, AMSOIL has varied and expanded its product line ... and it is available in SOME stores ... and some DODGE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS.
__________________________________________________

Amsoil is available in SOME stores -- mostly high performance speciality shops -- that lean more towards quality (for building performance and race engines, or an owner that appreciates superior products) than to a LOW "PRICE POINT" retail store (i.e. Walmart, etc.). I do know quite a few NAPA Stores that carry Amsoil (my cousin for one).

BUT ... HERE IS THE STORY YOU REALLY NEED TO READ ...

***** DODGE DEALERSHIPS NOW CARRY AMSOIL !!! *****

This was posted by Sephiroth 3/20/2004
V8 Forum --- Subject: New Chrysler Product?!

Message posted by Sephiroth:

"I went in to have my brakes checked today, and when I walked into the garage the first thing I saw made my jaw hit the floor. My local dealership now uses and sells AMSOIL products!! They've got it posted on a big banner over the service-desks. GM may not have been able to get it for their 'vettes, but obviously Dodge was able to, or they found out how awesome it is and started buying at regular price! When I go in for a tranny-filter, fluid, and gasket change next week, it's getting filled with AMS."

Sephiroth went on to state:

"This is at the Raleigh, NC dealership, Al Smith Buick, Dodge, Mazda. I told the guy at the desk I was astounded to see them using AMSOIL and that I had been using it for a while now. After he rode in the truck he said he'd be switching next oil-change in his Ram.

As for me, I've got it in the engine, and I'll have it in the tranny soon! Next up are the differentials. After that I need to get a dyno just for curiosity's sake. IF I get 3-5hp form the differential, and God knows how much from the engine and tranny, that'll be enough without any heavy mods. Well, for all I do anyway. If it is a significant gain, I'll post the results."

Hey Steve. Not sure if you can answer this but thought maybe you may know...
I just went online to order some more Amsoil. Need it BADLY LOL! (forgetful of changing oil in the wife's Caravan).

Anyway. I'm not sure what the deal is but as last time where I haven't used the Amsoil online store for a few onths in between puschases it now doesn't sign me in. I looked through my emails and found where I had to reset it LAST time for the same problem. It also says the ZO number I have written down doesn't exist. My email addy sends back my info, but NOT my password... :( I had to send an email and wait for someone to reset it for me last time.

Does the online store have a problem if you don't log in regularly or something?

Should I just sign up for a NEW account to be able to order some oil today so I don't need to wait?

I need to order enough oil for BOTH vehicles again.

Thanx for any info...
