Subject: stuck at work, will not start. IP: Logged
Message: My Dakota will not start tonight. It turns over fine but it will not get over the hump. Fuel pump is working, its getting fuel. Any chances it could be the timing belt?

Message: Most likely NOT the timing belt since it does not have one...it has a timing chain that (as a rule of thumb) will not break very easily. Could be lots of things causing your problem. Tell us more about your Dakota...year? engine? any symptoms noticed recently while driving? etc.

Message: It has stalled at a stoplight a time or two. The check engine light remians on but the code for it was a bad o2 sensor. its ran champ style until today, just seemed like the idle was low. It will turn over and almost seems to want to start, but smells flooded. Its a 96 dakota, automatic, v-6. I can here the fuel pump and the carb is getting fuel. Thanks for the help and reply. Ryan

Message: What year is yours, does it have a check engen light on, does it cut off on you? I have a 99 4X4 3.9. I had a problem like yours. It would be hard to start some times, and it would just die on me sometimes. When it started and ran it was fine, good power and every thing. I had a computer put on my truck and it never found any thing wrong. So i started trouble shooting and found it to be a relay. The Auto Shout Off realy's contacts were to dirty to alow a good spark some times. The trucks computer could not detect this problem so it did not give a falt code. I replaced the relay and it has worked great every sence. The problem start at about 50,000 miles and now i have 90,500 on it.

Message: Thanks, where is that relay located? Ill try anything. I was thinking maybe the timing chain but I never heard/felt anything break. It turns over fine, just like it wants to start, it rumbles like its trying. Im out of ideas short of starting with the coil, wires, plugs, distributor...who knows. It drove to work fine, no problems, just would not start again. Ry
