I recently purchased a 2000 Dakota. When I bought it, the cigarette lighter had been pushed into the dash, so I need to figure out a way to pop it back out before I can use it.
If I can remove the central lower part of the dashboard, that would be my first choice, but it doesn't seem like I'm able to do that.
I started to remove the lower sections of the dash, first the part under the steering wheel, then the two screws from the bottom of the center section, then the ashtray and all of its screws. Finally, I removed the screws that were next to the glove compartment.
I tried to wiggle the section free, but it seemes like there is still something holding it in place, but I cannot figure out what it is.
Any help or pictures would be much appreciated.

Hey from what I remember when I had to replace the cigarette lighter, you need to remove, the dash well (part that goes around instrument cluster and radio, and then the middle piece should come right out.

Not sure how different it is from a 98 Dak, but here's what I had to do to get to it...
Remove the intstrument cluster bezel (or whatever it's called) like Jay said... mine just has clips and you have to gently pry the edges up until all the retaining clips have popped loose.
Then look underneath the lower dash and you'll see screws holding the lower part on. There will also prolly be a couple of screws underneath the instrument cluster bezel. Unscrew those and it should pop right out...then there's like quick releases for the airbag on/off switch and the cigarette lighter.

My 99 has a plug to the left of the air bag key switch. Is that for a second lighter or power port?

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll let you know how it turns out once I have time to actually pop everything off (agian).
Ron, same thing, I'll let you know what I find back there when I take my pannel off.
