Subject: My first oil change in the 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys I'm ready to do my first oil change in my 4.7 Dakota. I am using Mobil-1 Synthetic 5w-30 Newer Mileage Formula, but I dunno what filter I want to use. I used a Fram in my 91 Dakota with a 3.9 becasue I was cheap and the truck was old. I Want either a wix, k&n, or a mobil. Im leaning towards the mobil right now, (only reason why im not going with wix is the closest place that carries them are 20 minutes away and im too lazy to drive out there, but next time im gonna pick up about 3 filters so I have them.) Any suggestions guys?

Message: Excellent choice of oil.
Any of the three filter brands you mentioned are superior to the Fram in quality of construction and filtration. The Mobil-1 filter can metal is a bit thicker, but it is a more expensive filter, compared to the others. AC Delco filters are pretty good, too.
There has been a discussion or two here lately on the relative merits of using a larger than stock oil filter. Many prefer, as I do, to use larger filters, for their obvious added filter capacity. Other folks prefer to stick with the stock filter size.
If you decide to go with larger filters, here's a list. They are all equivalent to the Fram PH8A, which fits on the 4.7 engine with room to spare:
AC Delco PFL1A
Mobil-1 M1-301
Bosch 3500
STP S8A
Quaker State Q58A
Motorcraft FL-1A
Purolator Pure One PL30001

Message: Don`t forget the two liter plastic bottle trick for filter removal. Cut the bottom off the bottle, loosen filter enough so it doesn`t leak but can be removed with the bottle slid over it.
If you can find them ,Baldwins B2(over sized version of the stock size B34) is my suggestion.

Message: Yes! No more oil down the forearm, shoulder and neck. Now... what are some of you doing to keep the oil from running down the skid plate from the oil pan drain, aside from the obvious like removing the skid plate? A co-worker was trying to describe a hose assembly that could be attached to the drain. I was thinking about getting the Sawzall out and making the skid plate opening a little bigger but I'd rather leave it stock.

Message: I've heard the Walmart brand filters are good and are made with synthetic fibers. Napa Gold are supposed to be good as well. I've been using mopar filters but I might switch to either the Walmart or Napa one since I am also using Mobil1 now.

Message: Re: Skid plate and oil change.
Get a funnel used to put fluid in the transmission - about $1 at Pep Boys - it is red with large cone and a narrow point. Insert it between the skid plat and oil pan by squeezing the open area together. The narrow part goes through the skid plate opening.
Losen the oil pan screw and drain. It works for me.

Message: I was using ac-delco filters until Wal-mart stop selling them and started selling fram.
After doing some research I went with a NAPA silver filters. Wix makes NAPA Gold/Silver filters. Upon a more indepth study and email's to NAPA I found out that NAPA Gold filters and NAPA Silver filters are exactly the same filter!! Only Silver is half the price of Gold.
I've been using the 2 liter bottle trick for the past 4.5 yrs no spills or drips. Works great!!
